European LCCs: Ryanair biggest and now fastest-growing major LCC in Europe

Not content with being Europe’s biggest LCC in passenger numbers Ryanair reported growth of over 20% in May making it the fastest growing European LCC, at least among those that are kind enough to report traffic figures.

20% growth saw more people queuing to get on Ryanair.

Previous growth champions Norwegian, SkyEurope and Vueling have all entered a period of consolidation with all three reporting single-digit growth in May. Data for UK LCCs bmibaby and Jet2.com has now been unearthed for the early part of the year courtesy of the UK CAA. Germanwings continues to generate passenger numbers slightly below last year’s figures.

easyJet had the best load factor for the fourth successive month

All the tracked LCCs reported improved load factors in May compared to the Easter-less April. easyJet remains load factor champion for the fourth successive month with Germanwings runner-up for the third month in a row. Five of nine LCCs achieved 80% load factors in May with only clickair (Barcelona operations only) failing to achieve 70%. However, clickair has regained its crown as Barcelona’s busiest airline after briefly losing out to Spanair in April.

And for that matter if anyone from Blue Air, MyAir, Sterling, Transavia, TUIfly.com, Volareweb or Wizz Air would also like to reveal their monthly traffic growth and load factors we would be delighted to hear from you.
