Southwest Airlines joins the dots across its top 20 airports

Southwest Airlines’ Tampa to San Juan

  • Southwest Airlines has used the last seven days to start several new services, as well as taking over some operations from its subsidiary AirTran Airways. Six of the airline’s top 20 airports (in terms of weekly flights) are involved in the activity – namely Baltimore/Washington, MD (BWI), Chicago Midway, IL (MDW), Houston Hobby, TX (HOU), Kansas City, MO (MCI), Orlando, FL (MCO) and Tampa, FL (TPA). In a classic case of an LCC ‘joining up the network dots’, many of the new routes for Southwest are the same, with Charlotte, NC (CLT)which is featured in a separate Airport Profile this week, Flint, MI (FNT) and Rochester, NY (ROC) being connected from four, three and four of the airline’s top 20 airports respectively. With Charlotte being heavily featured, significant competition is mounted by US Airways to Baltimore/Washington (63 weekly services) and Orlando (68), while jetBlue Airways will provide LCC competition on routes into San Juan (SJU), Puerto Rico from Tampa, FL (TPA) with 21 weekly flights, and also to Orlando with 42 weekly flights.
