TAROM resumes Bucharest-Geneva flights after more than 22 years

  • TAROM, the national carrier of Romania, resumed its service from Bucharest (OTP) to Geneva (GVA) on 26 November which it last operated in 1991. The 1,572-kilometre twice-weekly service (Tuesdays and Saturdays) will be served by the SkyTeam carrier’s 124-seat 737-300s. TAROM’s 36th route from Bucharest will face direct competition from Wizz Air’s twice-weekly service.

I worked at GVA airport from 1967 until 2012, but there was never a scheduled TAROM flight between OTP and GVA. The only airlines to operate this route before Wizzair were LX and F7 for a few seasons, approximately around 2005 – 2007.
It’s true that after the Romanian revolution, the UN chartered apparently a TAROM Bac1-11 which was parked for a while at GVA airport, but that’s the only RO aircraft ever at GVA and it was definitely not a scheduled service.

    • Hi Willi – Thank you for spotting this. I have contacted TAROM to confirm this information.

    • Hi Willi,

I have received the confirmation from TAROM, that the route to GVA was last operated in 1991.

        Hi Vlad,
Thanks for investigating this. It doesn’t really matter, but I am 100% sure that TAROM never operated a scheduled service to GVA. TAROM operated to ZRH until about that period, but definitely never to GVA. Anyway, it’s not an important issue.
        Regards Willi
