Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport sees rapid growth in European services; easyJet and Wizz Air dominate new route launches in 2014

4 February: easyJet launch thrice-weekly flights between Berlin Schönefeld and Tel Aviv

easyJet launched thrice-weekly flights between Berlin Schönefeld and Tel Aviv on 4 February. This is easyJet’s sixth route to Tel Aviv, having introduced its first flights to Israel from London Luton in November 2009. Celebrating the launch in Berlin were Holger Wieck, easyJet Ground Operations Manager Berlin (fourth from left); Marjan Schöke, Airline Marketing, Berlin Airports (fifth from left); Philip Lehmann, easyJet Cabin Services Country Manager Germany (seventh from left) and easyJet crew.

Passenger numbers at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport were up 8.3% last year to 14.2 million, a new all-time record. Since 2009, traffic has grown by 30%, with the majority of the airport’s traffic going to, and coming from, destinations in Europe.

Over 30 new services from foreign carriers between 2009 and 2013

A table of the new services launched by foreign carriers from European airports between 2009 and 2013 reveals a broad mix of carriers from flag-carriers (Aeroflot, Air France, Finnair, SAS and Turkish Airlines), to other full-service carriers (Aegean Airlines, airberlin and Transaero Airlines) to LCCs (easyJet, germanwings, Norwegian, Pegasus Airlines and Wizz Air).
