United Airlines adds a dozen new routes including Chengdu

United Airlines launched a new daily service between the capitals of the US and Spain, with the commencement on 6 June of flights between Washington Dulles and Madrid, using the airline’s 757s. A ribbon-cutting ceremony and celebratory cake were part of the festivities at Madrid Airport.

United Airlines’ new service from San Francisco (SFO) to Chengdu in China, which launched on Monday 9 June, was celebrated by a big ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Californian airport.   • United Airlines had a busy week launching a dozen new routes from various bases. These included two new long-haul routes; one from Washington Dulles, DC (IAD) to Madrid (MAD) in Spain, and another from San Francisco, CA (SFO) to Chengdu (CTU) in China. The Madrid route was previously served on United’s behalf by Aer Lingus. The seven new domestic routes are operated on United’s behalf by its regional airline partners including CommutAir, ExpressJet, GoJet and SkyWest. Direct competition is provided on only two of the 12 routes.
