What else would you bake for a new route to Funchal but Madeira cake of course. Hopefully some of the passengers on the first weekly flight by Jet2.com from Newcastle, which began on 4 July, managed to sample some of this famous cake before the inaugural flight crew ate it all.
- Jet2.com now boasts 30 destinations from its Newcastle (NCL) base, courtesy of a new weekly service (Fridays) to Funchal (FNC) in Madeira, which started on 4 July. Operated by its 148-seat 737-300s, the 2,749-kilometre sector will face direct competition from Thomson Airways which also flies the airport pair weekly. The seasonal operation is scheduled to terminate on 31 October. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com said: “We hope the passengers on the inaugural flight enjoy their summer getaways to Madeira. The addition of this holiday hotspot from Newcastle further demonstrates our ongoing commitment to providing an unrivalled selection of great value flights and holidays for our loyal customers in the region!” Chris Sanders, Newcastle Airport Aviation Development Director, said: “The start of this new service to Madeira is great news for North East travellers who will enjoy even more choice from Newcastle Airport. Passengers wishing to escape the unpredictable British weather can enjoy the sunshine on this wonderful island and all it has to offer.”
