There was a welcome banner and local entertainment at Johor Bahru to welcome the first flight from Shenzhen with Spring Airlines on 13 January. The twice-weekly service will not face any competition and is the Chinese LCC’s third route to Malaysia.
- Spring Airlines has launched its latest international route with the commencement on 13 January of a twice-weekly (Mondays and Fridays) service between Shenzhen (SZX) and Johor Bahru (JHB). The 2,577-kilometre route will be operated by the Chinese LCC’s A320s. Out of the airline’s 65 international routes, this is only the third to Malaysia. Japan is currently the best served market by Spring Airlines with 23 routes, followed by Thailand with 17 and South Korea with 10. Spring’s other two routes to Malaysia are both to Kota Kinabalu; a daily service from Shanghai Pudong and a three times weekly service from Shenzhen. As a result of this new route Spring now has just under 4% of the China-Malaysia market as measured by weekly seat capacity, well behind market leaders AirAsia (32%), AirAsia X (25%), China Southern Airlines (12%) and Malaysia Airlines (10%).
