Route of the Week: Cathay Pacific’s Hong Kong to Moscow Domodedovo

This week, UK regional airline flybe has launched the largest number of routes; 10 out of the week’s total 38. In the last week, 35 new routes were launched. Notably, there were no route launches in the Americas, but all other continents are represented with great launch celebrations. Which two airlines launched the same route on the same day? Turkish Airlines, which is rumoured to be merging with Serbia’s Jat Airways, has expanded in the former Yugoslavia, but to which country capital?

This week, the world’s 64 new routes have had a global spread, with every continent represented with multiple new routes. US airports have seen the most launches, but the week has also seen landmark events elsewhere, such as the opening of a brand-new airport in Tibet and the first international route in 18 years at a Brazilian airport. This has been a busy week for route launches. Out of 75 new routes, 25 are started by Ryanair which launched its new Malaga base. Still, we have information and photos from all the remaining 50 worldwide routes, ranging from CityJet’s short hop across the English Channel to Qatar Airways new South American service.

39 new routes were launched by 28 airlines in the last week. Although several new routes started in the Middle East, it is notable that none of them were launched by the ‘MEB3’ Gulf carriers. Launching the most new routes are Wizz Air from London Luton, Hamburg International from Cologne/Bonn and flydubai from Dubai. Read all the information and see the celebratory pictures.

The United States dominated the world’s route launches this week, which is detailed in our top story, but a major political breakthrough for flights between Taiwan and mainland China resulted in three airlines launching the same route. The total of 65 new routes involved 60 airports in the US, followed by Germany, China, Spain, the UK and Italy, each with four to six airports featured. This week has seen the launch of over 100 new routes! The single airport to have experienced the most new routes is Keflavik Airport in Iceland, followed by Ireland’s Cork Airport.  The week’s routes are between 60 of the world’s countries, giving our coverage a truly global spread. In the last week, Russian airports saw the most new routes launched, followed by airports in the UK. The US, Italy, Spain, Greece, China and Norway also had multiple launches, while the rest of the week’s 41 new routes took place in Canada, Tunisia and across Europe and Asia.

Over 60 new routes this week with a strong bias towards European LCCs. Cimber Sterling, easyJet, Jet2.com, Ryanair and Wizz Air all launched multiple routes. But AirAsia, Avianova, BA CityFlyer, Delta, Flydubai, Southwest, Spanair and Transaero among others all had reasons to celebrate this week.

54 new routes were launched in the last week, with the most airports involved located in the United States, followed by Italy. 25 European countries are represented as well as the US, Canada, Malaysia, India, Pakistan, UAE, Afghanistan, Greenland, Kuwait, Oman and Singapore.

The last week has been another busy week with 87 routes being launched by 27 of the world’s airlines. New routes have started in countries as varied as across 25 European countries as well as Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, South Africa and the US.
