Over the Christmas and New Year period, 36 new routes were launched across the world and they were far from only to ski and sun destinations. We have analysis and pictures to go with the new routes that range from Transaero’s 11,500-kilometre route between Moscow and Rio to Cape Air’s 300-kilometre hop between San Juan and Anguilla in the Caribbean.

Ranked third in the Thai market  after Thai Airways and AirAsia, Bankok Airways labels itself “Asia’s Boutique Airline”. But since 2008, it has radically changed its route network, downsized internationally, and focussed on the domestic and regional core market. Now, with orders for four A350s, the airline clearly has ambitious, new expansion plans to go long haul.

The United States dominated the world’s route launches this week, which is detailed in our top story, but a major political breakthrough for flights between Taiwan and mainland China resulted in three airlines launching the same route. The total of 65 new routes involved 60 airports in the US, followed by Germany, China, Spain, the UK and Italy, each with four to six airports featured. This week has seen the launch of over 100 new routes! The single airport to have experienced the most new routes is Keflavik Airport in Iceland, followed by Ireland’s Cork Airport.  The week’s routes are between 60 of the world’s countries, giving our coverage a truly global spread.
