Three countries are performing worse than last year. Japan, Ireland and Spain have had sluggish starts to the year, while only the Netherlands has seen positive growth in all four months. The unexpectedly good weather in the UK in April may have dampened enthusiasm for last minute holiday breaks around Easter.

Among the emerging markets Morocco is showing the benefits of having signed an open-skies agreement with the EU. Romania and Bulgaria, which both joined the EU at the beginning of this year, have also seen impressive growth. The Polish market continues to show robust growth aided by the influx of immigrant workers into the UK.
