Global new routes round-up

This week’s route highlights are:

  • Logo: AeroMexicoAeromexico begins a new twice-weekly direct service between Mexico City (MEX) and Barcelona (BCN) from Sunday 16th December using a 767. The mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, recently visited Mexico to help commemorate the launch of the new route. According to research in 2006 some 100,000 people travelled between the two cities using indirect flights.
  • Logo: Air CanadaAir Canada launches five seasonal routes next week all of which will be served just once a week. Montreal (YUL) will be connected to Providenciales (PLS), Toronto (YYZ) to Santa Clara (SNU) in Cuba and Vancouver (YVR) to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo (ZIH) in Mexico. Ottawa (YOW) gets two new connections to Cancun (CUN) and Montego Bay (MBJ) in Jamaica. Flights will be operated by a combination of A319s and E190s.
  • Logo: Motor ShowAir Malta originally planned to start a new twice weekly service between Malta (MLA) and Bologna (BLQ) on 17 December. However, the start date was brought forward to Thursday 6th December to enable Maltese car enthusiasts to visit the world renowned Bologna Motor Show which runs between the 7th and 16th of December.
  • Logo: AirTranAirTran unfurls a couple of new ‘winter-sun’ routes next week to Arizona and Florida. A new daily service links Milwaukee (MKE) to Phoenix (PHX) while Boston (BOS) is connected to Tampa (TPA). On the latter route AirTran will be competing with Delta and JetBlue who both operate the route twice daily.
  • China Southern Airlines will soon be connecting Urumqi (URC) with Ashgabat (ASB) in Turkmenistan. Flights will operate twice weekly as an overnight flight on the 1687 mile flight.
  • Logo: DeltaDelta offers New Yorkers the chance to escape an often harsh winter by commencing thrice-weekly flights from New York JFK (JFK) to Port Of Spain (POS) starting on 20 December. The 2206 mile sector will be operated by 737-800s. Meanwhile SkyWest operating as Delta Connection starts double-daily services from Salt Lake City (SLC) to Yuma (YUM) in Arizona using CRJs. Delta’s only other service from Yuma is to Boise, Idaho.
  • Logo: EasyJetHot on the heels of its first route from Birmingham (BHX), easyJet launches straight into its second route from the airport by starting twice-weekly flights to Grenoble (GNB). This winter easyJet will operate from five UK airports to the French ski gateway. Apart from Birmingham the other airports are Bournemouth, Bristol, London Gatwick and London Luton.
  • Logo: FireFlyFirefly, Malaysia’s low-cost regional airline which operates Fokker 50s is adding two new destinations from Kuala Lumpur’s Subang airport (SBZ) to Johor Bahru (JHB) and Kuala Terengganu (TGG). Both routes will operate daily from 18 December.
  • Logo: MyAirMyAir continues to expand its network from its new Bari (BRI) base in Southern Italy, with the addition of weekly flights to Athens (ATH) and Madrid (MAD), and thrice weekly connections to Barcelona (BCN). All flights will be operated by CRJ900s. Traffic at Bari airport is up 20% in 2007 to the end of October, thanks in part to the investment in a new terminal facility in 2006 by airport operator Aeroporti di Puglia.
  • Logo: Ryanair SkiOk, how many routes do you suppose Ryanair is starting next week? Well, the answer is only seven though another nine which first launched last winter are being re-started for the winter ski season. The seven all-new routes link Bournemouth (BOH) to Milan Bergamo (BGY), Bristol (BRS) to Salzburg (SZG) and Turin (TRN), Gothenburg City (GSE) to Salzburg (SZG), Liverpool (LPL) to Friedrichshafen (FDH) and finally, Stockholm Skavsta (NYO) to Grenoble (GNB) and Salzburg (SZG).
  • Image: SkybusUS LCC newcomer Skybus is offering two new Florida destinations from its mini-base at Portsmouth (PSM), New Hampshire (also known as Pease International). Daily flights to St Augustine (UST) and Punta Gorda (PGD) begin on the 17th December. St Augustine is between Jacksonville and Daytona Beach while Punta Gorda is between Fort Myers and Sarasota.
  • Logo: Sterling-dkMulti-based Nordic LCC Sterling inaugurates five new ski routes next week. Copenhagen (CPH), Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN) all get weekly services to Chambery (CMF), while Salzburg (SZG) is added from Oslo (OSL) and Stockholm (ARN). All routes operate only on a Saturday.
  • Logo: Swiss International Air LinesSwiss is adding a new weekly service from Manchester (MAN) to Geneva (GVA) for ski enthusiasts. An Avro RJ 100 will operate the route every Sunday morning starting on 16 December. Swiss already operates three daily flights from Manchester to Zurich, and three weekly flights to Basel.
  • Logo: TAMTAM has brought forward to 21 December the launch date of its new daily Madrid (MAD) service from Sao Paulo (GRU). An A330 will operate the route. This is now TAM’s fifth destination in Europe after Frankfurt, London, Milan and Paris. The airline will face competition from Iberia which operates the route twice daily and Air China which offers twice-weekly flights.
  • Logo: TransaviaTransavia France launches two new weekly services from Paris Orly (ORY) to Las Palmas (LPA) and Tenerife Sur (TFS). Las Palmas flights operate on Fridays while Tenerife services take to the skies on Saturdays. Meanwhile, the ‘original’ Transavia launches thrice weekly flights from Amsterdam (AMS) to Innsbruck (INN), as well as new routes from Rotterdam (RTM) to Grenoble (GNB) and Salzburg (SZG) which will both operate four times weekly.
  • Logo: United | LAXUnited launches a major new transatlantic service starting Saturday 15 December when it connects Los Angeles (LAX) with Frankfurt (FRA). A Boeing 777 will operate the route daily. This will be United’s 8th daily flight to Frankfurt as it already serves the German financial centre from Washington (three daily flights), Chicago and San Francisco (two daily flights each). Star Alliance partner Lufthansa already serves the Los Angeles route on a daily basis while Air India offers three flights per week.
  • Logo: USA 3000USA 3000 introduces a number of seasonal ‘winter sun’ routes next week. Sarasota (SRQ) in Florida will shortly be connected with Cleveland (CLE), Detroit (DTW) and Chicago O’Hare (ORD). In addition the residents of Pittsburgh (PIT) can now make weekly non-stop flights to Montego Bay (MBJ)
  • Logo: WestJetWestJet offers up a range of new Mexican destinations for western Canadians. San Jose Del Cabo (SJD) will now be served weekly from Calgary (YYC), Edmonton (YEG) and Vancouver (YVR) while Mazatlan (MZT) is now offered from Calgary (YYC) and Edmonton (YEG). For eastern Canadians there is a new service from Toronto (YYZ) to the island of St Lucia (UVF) in the Caribbean.
