Madrid makes real progress in Eurohub superleague

Analysis of Europe’s six major hubs in 2007, shows that Iberia’s main base at Madrid has consistently been the fastest growing, with double-digit growth each month, though this probably has more to do with developments in the low-cost point-to-point market than in Iberia’s network strategy.

Only Rome Fiumicino has come close in recent months with over 10% growth in each of the last six months. London Heathrow, still Europe’s busiest airport, has struggled for much of the year with traffic down in six of the first 11 months of 2007. The opening of T5 in March 2008 should improve Heathrow’s performance considerably.

The major hubs for Europe’s smaller flag carriers shows SAS hubs Copenhagen and Stockholm among the slowest growing with Vienna now the fastest growing, though again this has less to do with Austrian’s network growth and more to do with SkyEurope’s trebling of capacity at the airport.
