Jet Airways has joined Air Arabia (14 weekly flights), Air India (daily flights) and Air India Express (four flights per week) in launching flights between Thiruvananthapuram (TRV), also known as Trivandrum, and Sharjah (SHJ) in the United Arab Emirates. Jet Airways will operate the route on a daily basis using 737-800s. Trivandrum International Airport is the gateway to the state of Kerala in India, and is India’s southernmost airport. In the year to March 2011, the airport handled 2.53 million passengers (making it the 11th busiest in India) of which 1.84 million (73%) were on international services, primarily to destinations in the Middle East, the Maldives and Sri Lanka. This Sharjah service is Jet Airways’ sixth route from the airport after domestic flights to Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai, and international flights to Dammam in Saudi Arabia and Muscat in Oman. For Sharjah International Airport, this is Jet Airways’ second route, as it has been operating daily flights from Kochi since 1 September 2009.
