Frontier Airlines has launched two new routes from Kansas City, MO (MCI), a focus city for the airline. Since last Tuesday, Frontier has been operating daily flights to Houston Hobby, TX (HOU), using 99-seat E-190s. Flights depart Kansas City at 09:10 arriving in Houston at 11:00. Return flights depart Houston at 11:30 arriving back in Kansas City at 13:15. Indirect competition comes from Continental, which operates over 50 weekly flights between Kansas City and Houston Intercontinental Airport. This is Frontier’s second route to Houston Hobby as it already serves the airport three times daily from Denver. Frontier’s other new route from Kansas City is to Las Vegas, NV (LAS), which it will operate six times weekly (daily except Saturday) using 138-seat A319s. Direct competition on this route comes from Southwest which flies the route four times daily. In the first three-quarters of 2011 passenger numbers at Kansas City International Airport are up 2.3% to 7.57 million. In September, Frontier was the third biggest airline at the airport with 14.4% of enplaned passengers, behind Southwest (36.8%) and Delta (18.6%).
