William McKeeva Bush, Premier of the Cayman Islands, cut the ribbon for Cayman Airways’ maiden flight from Grand Cayman to Panama City.
- On 31 May, Cayman Airways commenced seasonal services connecting the Caribbean island Grand Cayman (GCM) and Panama City (PTY). The 1,200-kilometre route connecting the two financial centres is now offered with twice-weekly frequencies until 3 September, and is operated with 737-300s. David Kirkaldy, President of the Cayman Islands Chamber of Commerce, said: “The new route makes the Cayman Islands directly accessible from Central and South America, without the need to apply for the US visa. We have lobbied such route for many years.” There is no competition on the route, for which connecting in Miami is the alternative.
