Oakland celebrates 85th anniversary; still strong on Hawaii

A cake was baked for Oakland International Airport’s 85th anniversary, which was celebrated by the airport staff. A key historical fact is that the first transpacific crossing by air, from OAK to Oahu, was in June 1927. The ‘Bird of Paradise’, flown by Lieutenants Hegenberger and Maitland, took 25 hours 30 minutes. Today, the same flight takes just five hours and Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines fly six times a day to four Hawaiian islands.
