Qatar Airways inaugurates Najaf as its third Iraqi destination

Qatar Airways’ Doha to Najaf

Qatar Airway’s CFFO, Suhail Ismaeel; SVP GCC, Levant, Iran and the Indian subcontinent, Fathi Al Shehab; and Shaikh Fayed Alshemari, Chairman Najaf Municipality and Chairman of the airport’s board, cut the celebratory cake to mark the airline’s arrival to its third Iraqi city.

  • Qatar Airways added Najaf (NJF) in central Iraq to its offering from Doha (DOH) on 23 January. The airline, which already operates to Erbil and Baghdad, now operates four-weekly services to Najaf using its A320s. Akbar Al Baker, the airline’s CEO, said: “Iraq is proving to be an important market for Qatar Airways. The start of our services to three cities in the country within a short span of time emphasises the value and importance of tourism, trade and business links between Qatar and Iraq.” While there is no direct competition on the 1,000-kilometre route, flydubai offers thrice-weekly schedule from Dubai, which it launched in January 2012.

  1. Ibrahim Dashti says:

I don’t know why flydubai’s services are the only indirect competition mentioned when several airlines in the region offer flights to Najaf. Air Arabia operates daily flights from Sharjah which is only 18km from Dubai. Daily services are also offered by Gulf Air from Bahrain which is the closest competition to Qatar Airways as Bahrain and Doha are only 146km away from each other. Jazeera Airways offers limited service with two weekly flights from Kuwait, the closest Gulf airport linked with Najaf at a distance of only 460km.
