Southwest Airlines arrives in Grand Rapids

Welcoming Southwest’s first Customers to Grand Rapids was this fantastic cake

Southwest took over two existing AirTran routes (to Baltimore/Washington and Orlando) at Grand Rapids Gerald R Ford Airport on Sunday 11 August, but also started two new daily services to Denver and St Louis. The celebratory cake was created by local bakers Cakabakery. Their star baker, Jason Kakerbaker (we're not sure if that's his real name), recently featured on The Food Network's Cupcake Wars and finished second.

Southwest Airlines started two new routes from Grand Rapids, MI (GRR) on Sunday 11 August, when it launched daily flights from its bases at Denver, CO (DEN) and St Louis, MO (STL). Competition on the Denver route comes from United Airlines (two daily flights), and Frontier (daily flights), though Frontier’s services will end early next month. In addition, Southwest has taken over the routes from Grand Rapids to Baltimore/Washington and Orlando, that had previously been operated by its wholly-owned subsidiary AirTran Airways. In early January Southwest will add Fort Myers and Tampa (both in Florida) to its Grand Rapids network.
