Penang welcomed the inaugural arrival of Hong Kong Express from Hong Kong last week with a special celebration in the terminal. Speaking during the launch conference was Penang’s Chief Minister, Lim Guan Eng, who commented: “Penang is Malaysia’s third busiest airport after Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu and as a Top 10 holiday destination in Asia, is bound to grow further.”
- Hong Kong Express, which recently rebranded itself as a genuine LCC, started daily flights to Penang (PEN) in Malaysia on 14 November using its 176-seat A320s. The 2,410-kilometre sector from Hong Kong (HKG) is also served by Cathay Pacific Airways with ten weekly flights. Andrew Cowen, Deputy CEO of HK Express, said: “We are extremely pleased to commence daily flights to Penang, opening up yet another fascinating Asian location to the people of Hong Kong at yet another incredibly competitive low price!” Hong Kong Express will serve a total of eight destinations from Hong Kong this winter; Chiang Mai (Thailand), Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), Kunming (China), Osaka Kansai (Japan), Phuket (Thailand), Taichung (Taiwan), Tokyo Haneda (Japan) and now Penang.
