- Tigerair Taiwan, the new joint venture between Singapore’s Tiger Airways and Taiwan’s China Airlines, and the first Taiwan-based LCC, launched its maiden flight on Friday 26 September. The airline’s first daily flight on the 3,212-kilometre route between Taipei Taoyuan (TPE) and Singapore (SIN) had only three empty seats on the airline’s 180-seat A320. Competition on the route is considerable: China Airlines and Singapore Airlines each operate 14 weekly flights; Jetstar Airways has 11 weekly flights; Scoot 10 weekly flights; Tiger Airways nine weekly flights; and EVA Airways seven weekly flights. According to Taiwanese authorities the number of passengers travelling in and out of Taiwan on budget airlines has climbed from just 260,000 in 2009 to 2.3 million in 2013, an increase of almost 800%.
