  • Southwest Airlines, which during the course of last week linked Washington Reagan to Tampa, continued to expand this week by adding nine new routes. Following the lifting of the Wright Amendment flight restrictions on 13 October, Southwest commenced seven routes from Dallas Love Field, TX (DAL), with the longest sector being the 2,005-kilometre sector to Los Angeles, CA (LAX) operated thrice-daily, using the LCC’s 143-seat 737-700s. Moreover, the airline expanded its Mexican offering from Denver, CO (DEN), with daily flights to Cancun (CUN) and weekly (Saturdays) operations to San Jose del Cabo (SJD). Overall Southwest will face direct competition on four of the nine new additions, from Virgin America, Frontier Airlines and United Airlines. In addition, the LCC will commence services from Love Field to Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa, Santa Ana/John Wayne, San Diego, Nashville, New York LaGuardia and Phoenix on 2 November; while on 6 January, it will add flights to San Francisco and Oakland. Dallas Love Field Airport is analysed in more detail in this week’s airport profile.
