Arch of Triumph certificate and spacemen land in Narita

Firefighters at Tokyo Narita

We absolutely love the protective gear worn by the firefighters at Tokyo Narita. Initially we weren’t sure whether aliens had transported the Arch of Triumph certificate to Japan for us, as you never know what lengths FedEx goes to these days to ensure secure guaranteed overnight delivery.

This week’s winner, Košice Airport in Slovakia, has achieved the first 10.0 score of the 2015 competition, and only the third perfect score awarded in the competition, which is now in its third year. This is however, the first 10.0 awarded by anna.aero’s Chief Analyst, so it is high praise indeed from our #1 numbers man. The only other two perfect scores were awarded by the recently-departed Assistant Editor Vlad Cristescu, for an FTWA in Iasi (in his native Romania) almost exactly a year ago (18 June), and by anna.aero’s Publisher Paul Hogan (the most generous judge) in November 2013 for an effort from Adelaide. Notably, despite its top marks from Hogan, this arch did not win the weekly competition it was entered in – whereas the other two arches that have achieved FTWA nirvana did. One final point of note is the fact that anna.aero’s Editor – the notoriously hard to please Marc Watkins – is yet to issue a 10.0 (he scored 9.8 for Košice’s effort this week). On this fact, he said: “I know that FTWA perfection is out there, but in the words of Bono ‒ I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.” Keep monitoring!!

Coloured water and a pair of leaping dolphins…gets this FTWA a 10 from Anker…

Judge’s Comments: anna.aero’s Chief Analyst Ralph Anker could not get enough of this FTWA, so much so he gave it his first ever perfect score. When asked for his score, and why he had scored it so highly, he simply remarked: “It’s a perfect arch, it’s in two colours, two fire trucks and nice backdrop.” Nuff said.

Jonny: 8.5; Marc: 9.8; Paul: 8.5; Ralph: 10.0.

Iberia Madrid to Budapest 2 June

Iberia Madrid to Budapest 2 June

One day BUD’s fire fighters will knock the golf ball off the top of their tower…

Judge’s Comments: This is a good FTWA. It scored 31.7 – not a bad effort at all. But such is the standard of the competition this week there were four better arches sent to the anna.aero offices from around the world than this one.

Jonny: 7.9; Marc: 7.7; Paul: 8.0; Ralph: 8.1.

TACV Praia to Providence 2 June

TACV Praia to Providence 2 June

Providence breaks its FTWA cherry…badly…

Judge’s Comments: This is a first-time effort from the Rhode Island State airport ‒ and it shows. Was the left-hand tender even there? Maybe it’s at another airport?? Whatever happened, perhaps there was an America’s Got Talent re-run on in the station, the airport will never get back its first time.

Jonny: 4.5; Marc: 4.7; Paul: 6.5; Ralph: 5.3.

Norwegian Barcelona to Trondheim 3 June

Norwegian Barcelona to Trondheim 3 June

Trondheim means grey in Norwegian (not really)…

Judge’s Comments: If this was an archery contest, this FTWA from Norway would win hands down, given the close grouping of the anna.aero judges’ scores. Just 0.2 covering all four is the closest grouping witnessed in the near two-year history of the Arch of Triumph competition. Shame, as it doesn’t win you the certificate in this weekly contest…

Jonny: 7.3; Marc: 7.5; Paul: 7.5; Ralph: 7.4.

Vueling Barcelona to Moscow Sheremetyevo 3 June

Vueling Barcelona to Moscow Sheremetyevo 3 June

Wow…would you just look at that sunrise in Moscow…oh yeah…there’s an FTWA too…

Judge’s Comments: Vueling’s thrice-weekly flights from Barcelona are flown on the red-eye, leaving Spain at 2240, with an 0410 arrival in the Russian capital. The result is a staggeringly beautiful sky, remarked upon by all of anna.aero’s judges. Nature at its best. The FTWA ain’t bad either…

Jonny: 9.0; Marc: 8.7; Paul: 8.4; Ralph: 8.8.

Air Canada Toronto Pearson to Amsterdam 4 June

Air Canada Toronto Pearson to Amsterdam 4 June

Providence’s missing left-hand tender…found in Amsterdam…

Judge’s Comments: While there can be excuses made for tiny Providence in the US, about there being just one tender in the photo with its first ever FTWA, the same can not be said about AMS, which has been a regular provider of FTWAs in this competition – with this being its sixth. The Dutch airport also recently won one of the public votes at the start of the S15 season. So there can be no hiding from this distinctly average entry here…

Jonny: 7.2; Marc: 6.3; Paul: 7.9; Ralph: 6.6.

United Airlines Houston Intercontinental to Providenciales 4 June

United Airlines Houston Intercontinental to Providenciales 4 June

I’ve heard of people photo-bombing before, but never an aircraft…

Judge’s Comments: Everybody will know the modern social phenomenon of photo-bombing. Where a hilarious individual sneaks into the background of another person’s photo with vaguely amusing results. What I never realised was that this fad has also stretched out to inanimate objects like aircraft. Facebook has a lot to answer for…

Jonny: 5.0; Marc: 5.9; Paul: 7.0; Ralph: 6.5.

Allegiant Air Myrtle Beach to Pittsburgh 5 June

Allegiant Air Myrtle Beach to Pittsburgh 5 June

The little known “Steeler” FTWA…a Pitt speciality…

Judge’s Comments: This FTWA is named after “Mean” Joe Greene, possibly the greatest Steeler to ever pull on a shirt for Pittsburgh’s football team. With nearly 80 career sackings, this FTWA is reminiscent of his flight through the air just before he smashed the opposition’s quarter-back into the ground. Ouch!

Jonny: 8.5; Marc: 8.7; Paul: 7.9; Ralph: 9.1.

Allegiant Air Tulsa to Los Angeles 5 June

Allegiant Air Tulsa to Los Angeles 5 June

A unique three tender welcome in Tulsa…

Judge’s Comments: 98% of all FTWAs we have received have been your standard, two-tender affair. The remaining handful have been some impressive four-tender efforts, which have come out with mixed results. What is on show here in Tulsa is a unique three-tender Arch of Triumph. Hmmm…we’re still not sure either…

Jonny: 6.5; Marc: 6.3; Paul: 6.7; Ralph: 7.9.

NIKI Vienna to Alicante 6 June

NIKI Vienna to Alicante 6 June

History never remembers runners-up…

Judge’s Comments: With a score of 35.4 you would expect to win a ‘normal’ week of Arch of Triumph competition. This is clearly not a normal week, as Alicante only came in second this week. It’s a bit like breaking the 100m world record, but then realising that Usain Bolt is in front of you…and already in the bar.

Jonny: 8.0; Marc: 9.4; Paul: 8.5; Ralph: 9.5.

Southwest Airlines Oakland to New Orleans 7 June

Southwest Airlines Oakland to New Orleans 7 June

Served up in the Big Easy…an FTWA cocktail…

Judge’s Comments: For those of you that do not recognise this type of FTWA, it is known as aSouthern Comfort’ named after the drink. This is an American liqueur made from neutral spirits with fruit, spice and whiskey flavouring. The brand was originally created by bartender Martin Wilkes Heron in New Orleans in 1874. But like the alcohol…this FTWA is an acquired taste…

Jonny: 7.0; Marc: 5.9; Paul: 6.7; Ralph: 7.0.

Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi to Edinburgh 8 June

Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi to Edinburgh 8 June

Major new airline…major FTWA mess-up…

Judge’s Comments: Getting a MEB3 airline to serve your airport is a big deal. Normally years of work has gone into the sales pitch. What you don’t want is a badly performed FTWA to welcome the first flight after all that endeavour. As a result, Edinburgh is bottom of the pile this week, after being sky-high following this impressive new route win. Kinda leaves a bitter taste in the mouth…

Jonny: 5.0; Marc: 4.5; Paul: 6.0; Ralph: 5.0.
