SWISS’ Zurich to Malta

On 1 July, Malta Airport welcomed its fifth new airline for 2015, SWISS. Flights from Zurich will operate four times weekly, with the Star Alliance member using a mixture of its single-aisle Airbus aircraft on the 1,378-kilometre sector. Cutting the cake in Malta are: Alan Borg, Malta Airport CEO; Andreas Widmer, inaugural SWISS Captain; Paul Bugeja, Malta Tourism Authority CEO; Annabelle Bonello, Honorary Consul General of Switzerland in Malta; Dominique Messerli, SWISS Crew member; and Stefan Zwicky, SWISS Head of Sales, Italy & Malta.

Passengers on the inaugural flight from Zurich to Izmir on 2 July were greeted with roses as they disembarked in Turkey. Flights on the airport pair will operate thrice-weekly, facing direct competition from SunExpress.

  • SWISS introduced four new services from its Zurich (ZRH) hub last week, starting on the 1 July with the launch of operations to Malta (MLA). Flights on the 1,378-kilometre sector will be flown four times weekly, using a mixture of the carrier’s single-aisle Airbus aircraft. The route faces direct competition from Air Malta. Commenting on the launch, Alan Borg, Malta Airport CEO, said: “SWISS is the fifth new airline to have been welcomed at Malta this year. This is another testament to the hard work of all stakeholders involved, as we strive towards another record year. Connectivity is a crucial element for our passengers, and SWISS offers great opportunities in this respect, because it adds Malta to a network that includes destinations like New York, Bangkok and many others globally”. The following day, 2 July, the Star Alliance member launched services to Brindisi (BDS), Izmir (ADB) and Santiago de Compostela (SCQ). All three of the seasonal airport pairs operate thrice-weekly using A320s, and all face direct competition according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. The latest route launches follow on from the week previous, where SWISS added seven new routes from Geneva. See how Malta Airport’s FTWA compares to others from around the world.
