Taiwanese airport takes weekly title; Asia narrows gap on Europe

So far Kaohsiung Airport has entered the Arch of Triumph competition three times in its three-year history – twice it has won the weekly award, including this week, and on the remaining occasion it finished third (with a score of 33.5), in a week that boasted 13 entrants and the airport (Doncaster Sheffield) which ending up finishing eighth overall in last year’s competition. Its winning score the first time around was a lowly 29.0, meaning the Taiwanese airport finished 28th out of the 43 weekly winners in the 2014 competition. However, that week there were just three entrants, one of which was disqualified, as the fire trucks at Pereira Airport in Colombia blew-in the door on the Jetstream 41 with an over-energetic water jet. This time Kaohsiung has done much better, securing eighth spot on the top 10 leader board in this year’s competition ‒ whether it stays inside the band of top performing fire crews is another matter. Perhaps more significantly, the airport’s win has narrowed the gap to just two between inter-regional leaders Europe (win nine victories) and Asia (with seven). Keep Monitoring!!

AirAsia Kuala Lumpur to Kaohsiung 16 July

AirAsia Kuala Lumpur to Kaohsiung 16 July

Not a bad picture considering it’s taken through tinted glass in the terminal…

Judge’s Comments: If only that last metre above the aircraft had been bridged by the water jets then this would have gone from being a very good FTWA to an excellent one. The resulting score may well then have been high enough to challenge the leaders of the 2015 Arch of Triumph competition. With two wins from three entries, the firefighters from Kaohsiung will still be pretty happy…

Czech Airlines Lodz to Edinburgh 14 July

Czech Airlines Lodz to Edinburgh 14 July

Looks like a perfect half, shame we can’t see the other side…

Judge’s Comments: The first of three FTWAs on a sequence of new routes that sees the Czech Airlines aircraft flying Prague-Lodz-Edinburgh-Rzeszow-Edinburgh-Lodz-Prague in one day, twice a week. Of the three, and despite the fact that we can only see 48% of whatever arch was actually created, this was the second best. Blimey…how bad must the worst one be then…

Czech Airlines Lodz to Edinburgh 14 July

Bad, but better than the second worst score in FTWA history…

Judge’s Comments: …ah…that bad. Huge gap in the middle of the arch…and no tenders visible…it’s easy to see why the anna.aero judges came down harshly on this effort from Edinburgh. That said, it’s a vast improvement on the 4.2 scored in May when the Scottish airport welcomed the start of American Airlines…the second worst score in Arch of Triumph history…

Czech Airlines Edinburgh to Rzeszow 14 July

Czech Airlines Edinburgh to Rzeszow 14 July

Brilliant FTWA, especially when considering the atrocious weather…

Judge’s Comments: Sometimes you just have to accept that despite all the best planning from the airport’s marketing and fire departments, Mother Nature is destined to throw her worst at you. Even the extendable booms (which still divide opinions between the anna.aero judges) could not make-up for the downpour that greeted the aircraft. That said, it was the best of three FTWAs for the start of this quite unique group of new Czech Airlines’ services…

AirAsia Kuala Lumpur to Utapao 15 July

AirAsia Kuala Lumpur to Utapao 15 July

Temple of the week but not arch…

Judge’s Comments: For those of you that don’t know, Utapao Airport serves the destination of Pattya in Thailand, of which one of its most popular attractions is the Sanctuary of Truth. This wooden temple has clearly been recreated here at the nearby airport…however the speciality Sanctuary of Truth FTWA was not good enough to win Arch of Triumph…

China Southern Airlines Lanzhou to St Petersburg 16 July

China Southern Airlines Lanzhou to St Petersburg 16 July

This FTWA is known as sunset in St Petersburg…

Judge’s Comments: Despite travelling 4,144 kilometres from Urumqi (where this service, which originates in Lanzhou, stops en-route) and having left China at 1805, this flight touches down in St Petersburg at 1859 (precisely) to capture this beautiful sunset on arrival. Certainly adds to the drama of this FTWA…which is only the second we have had from Russia’s second city…but only good enough for third place this week…

Czech Airlines Prague to Liverpool 17 July

Czech Airlines Prague to Liverpool 17 July

Nothing to do with the other three Czech Airlines’ launches this week…

Judge’s Comments: On 1 July we had five FTWAs for Wizz Air launches in a very busy week which had 27 competitors. However, the Budapest-based airline still did not win the weekly title. So with four out of the 10 entries sent in this week, you would have thought that Czech Airlines stood an even better chance than Wizz Air of winning…not so…

Dynamic Airways Fort Lauderdale to Caracas 17 July

Dynamic Airways Fort Lauderdale to Caracas 17 July

The angles are all wrong in Fort Lauderdale…

Judge’s Comments: It’s been a while since we have talked geometry in this section of anna.aero, but it is perhaps here where angles are the most critical piece of the new route marketing jigsaw (unless of course you are talking three-storey route launch cakes). With the 22 degree angle of the right-hand tender’s water jet here in Fort Lauderdale you will have Pythagoras turning in his grave…

Jonny: 4.5; Marc: 5.4; Paul: 4.0; Ralph: 1.8.

Dynamic Airways Fort Lauderdale to Caracas 17 July

Dynamic Airways Fort Lauderdale to Caracas 17 July

A rare South American FTWA…

Judge’s Comments: Until 2015 there had been no South American winners of the weekly Arch of Triumph in the three years of competition. Indeed, the continent has only provided a handful of entries. Hopes of the region adding to the two victories so far this year were short-lived after we opened up this wind-affected effort from Caracas…maybe next time…

Jonny: 6.5; Marc: 6.9; Paul: 5.5; Ralph: 6.3.

Qatar Airways Doha to Faisalabad 17 July

Qatar Airways Doha to Faisalabad 17 July

The pressure, the pressure…of being #1…

Judge’s Comments: Having smashed the competition wide apart last week with a table-topping FTWA for the flydubai launch, the pressure was clearly telling in Faisalabad this week. This arch, which comes 10th out 10 entries this week, for the arrival of Qatar Airways pales in comparison to the one produced last week…either that or the day shift of firefighters are just not as good as those on nights at the moment…

Jonny: 2.0; Marc: 4.7; Paul: 3.0; Ralph: 4.4.
