Discover who wins week 26 of the 2015 Arch of Triumph competition

Out of the hundreds of FTWAs we’ve been sent over the years, we’ve only had eight from Africa. 50% (two each) of those have been sent by George and Cape Town airports in South Africa and another 25% (two) from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. Admittedly of those eight, two won their respective weeks, although one of the winners, at Cape Town last October, was in a one-horse race. So it was nice this week to receive FTWA #9 from Nairobi – and from a new competitor too. Sadly no win this time out for Africa. While Columbus’ win does see North America close the gap on Asia to just one win in the race for second in the inter-regional competition, for the third week running the victorious airport has failed to make an impression on the top 10 leader board, with its winning score of just 27.9. Despite this fact, from the 24 competition weeks so far in 2015, the average winning score (32.23) is still above the 2014 average (29.95 – but from 39 weeks). Keep Monitoring!!

Southwest Airlines Columbus to Boston 8 August

Southwest Airlines Columbus to Boston

This FTWA is known locally as a Surly Girl…

Judge’s Comments: For those of you familiar with Columbus’ Short North district, you will know all about the Surly Girl Saloon – it’s also a favourite hang-out for the Columbus Airport firefighters after work. Created by Columbusite Elizabeth Lessner, it’s a cowgirl-themed bar. Now I understand why they go there…

Copa Airlines Panama City to Puebla 4 August

Copa Airlines Panama City to Puebla

Hey…even I know that’s not a E190….

Judge’s Comments: Airlines have a habit of doing this. Changing the aircraft doing the inaugural flight because some of the big bosses are on board. This seems to have caught the firefighters at Puebla out, as they had spent weeks in training getting ready for a Copa Airlines E190 on the launch flight…only for a 737-700 to turn up. No es bueno muchachos!!

China Southern Airlines Guangzhou to Nairobi 5 August

China Southern Airlines Guangzhou to Nairobi

Rarer than hen’s teeth and the stuff that comes out of a rocking horse’s behind…an African FTWA…

Judge’s Comments: This is only the ninth ever FTWA from Africa…out of the 500 or so we have received in the last three years of competition (less than 2%). Six of those nine FTWAs have come from three airports – Cape Town and George in South Africa, and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. So it’s nice to see Nairobi getting in on the global competition. Maybe next time it will submit a genuine contender for the weekly title…

Jonny: 6.5; Marc: 6.0; Paul: 5.9; Ralph: 5.7.

Southwest Airlines Dallas Love Field to Pittsburgh 9 August

Southwest Airlines Dallas Love Field to Pittsburgh

This FTWA has got the Wright stuff…

Judge’s Comments: For those of you that are unaware, the repeal of the Wright Amendment last year has not only meant more destinations are able to be flown from Dallas Love Field to more far-flung US states, but it also means more FTWAs for us to judge. Which is no bad thing…

Jonny: 5.2; Marc: 5.3; Paul: 6.5; Ralph: 4.3.
