A new leader at the top of the 2015 Arch of Triumph competition
To say that the firefighters at Birmingham Airport were upset earlier in the year when their table-topping score of 35.3 was beaten just two weeks later by Portland’s finest is perhaps an understatement. However, they have kept at it, sending anna.aero a total of six entries this year, giving them the title (so far at least) as the most-prolific FTWA airport in the world in 2015. They do have to notch up two further FTWAs in order to pass the overall record which belongs to Brussels Airport, which sent in seven entries in 2014 – still an Arch of Triumph competition record. However, this is perhaps a secondary concern for the bostin’ boys and girls from Brum, as its score of 37.9 sees them steam back onto the summit of the 2015 weekly battle, toppling Faisalabad which has held the position for the last 10 weeks. The victory for Europe also sees the region shore-up its #1 position in the inter-regional fight, having now secured 38% of all weekly wins. Keep Monitoring!!

VLM Airlines Antwerp to Birmingham 5 October
Judge’s Comments: Not even the dismal weather (the apron celebrations were performed under umbrellas!) could dent the near-perfection of this FTWA from Birmingham. anna.aero’s judges were particularly impressed by the curtain effect of the water arch. Not only did it a produce a score worthy of the overall lead in the 2015 competition, but Birmingham, like Hong Kong, now has two weekly winners inside the top 10. Totally bostin’…

Air China Beijing to Montreal 29 September
Judge’s Comments: It’s always a dilemma for the marketing departments of airports – do we put the photographer in a position to catch the common place touch down shot (yawn) of our first Chinese service or do we have them in the right place to catch the majestic beauty of the FTWA (yay!) we have planned? You know what our answer would be…

Jetstar Airways Gold Coast to Wuhan 29 September
Judge’s Comments: It’s been a while since a new style of FTWA has been invented, but we think that this one is worthy of that accolade. The anna.aero judges have come up with the moniker of ‘bird-scarer’ – when one water jet (or indeed both) is at such a steep angle that the firefighter in control of the water cannon must have seen an overflying bird (or flock), which could of course be a potential hazard to the incoming inaugural aircraft, and decides to do something about it…mid-ceremony! Phhwoooooosh!! (And a flutter of feathers down to the ground). We’ll wait and see if this new FTWA catches on…

Aeromexico Mexico City to Cozumel 1 October
Judge’s Comments: For those of you that have been lucky enough to travel to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, you will know that the whole area is littered with Mayan ruins. The island of Cozumel, which sits just off the coast, is no different, with its own share of these historical sites. No surprises then that the Cozumel firefighters have elected for a Mayan-themed FTWA…but its more ‘Mayan Ruin’ rather than ‘Mayan Temple’…

CityJet Cork to London City 1 October
Judge’s Comments: With its score of 33.9, this FTWA would have comfortably sat in the top half of the Arch of Triumph table (#13 in fact). With a slightly better picture and a tweak higher on the right-hand tender’s water jet, this FTWA may well have snatched weekly victory from Birmingham…and indeed the #1 spot overall. But then life is strewn with little things like that isn’t it. What could have been…personally I’d always wished I had studied A-level French (sigh)…

TAM Airlines Sao Paulo Guarulhos to Barcelona 1 October
Judge’s Comments: Having lost their last match 2-1 on Saturday to Sevilla, most of Barcelona is perhaps wondering if this was down to Messi’s injury? Can Neymar and Suarez fill the little man’s big boots until he is fit again?? How is he getting on with using crutches?? These thoughts were probably on the minds of the Barcelona airport firefighters too when the TAM Airlines aircraft touched down from Sao Paulo…

InterSky Friedrichshafen and Memmingen to Cologne Bonn 5 October
Judge’s Comments: One component of new route marketing that is out of the control of even the top airport marketing gurus at Cologne Bonn Airport is the weather. Not even the supremely organised Chi Mee Yuen can sort out unexpected factors like strong winds, although she assures us that it’s something she will sort out once she is back from her shopping vacation in South Korea…
