Košice Airport firefighters go wild with joy at second Arch of Triumph win

Kosices fire crew second Arch of Triumph

Did someone tell them that Daniel O’Donnell had just been voted off Strictly Come Dancing before they had this picture taken? There can be no other reason for the lack of tears of joy from Košice’s assembled fire crew upon receipt of their second Arch of Triumph certificate this year. They are: Jozef Debnárik, Firefighter; Jozef Kaňuščák, Firefighter; Július Bodnár, Firefighter; and Marcel Kiss, Head of Fire & Rescue Department.

This week we have decided to have a multi-picture special edition of the weekly Arch of Triumph competition. The judges at anna.aero regularly get sent more than one FTWA image of individual route launch water arches, so we will often have to decide which one is ‘best’ for scoring purposes. So this week, we thought we would give you, the reader, an insight into what we are looking for when you are sending in those hopeful pictures. Indeed, this week’s winner, Sydney, has stormed into second place on the overall leader board with its two FTWA images. The Australian airport also finished as #2 in the 2014 competition, with exactly the same score of 37.6. Perhaps it is destined to always be the bridesmaid and never the bride in this particular celebration. Also we have several first-time entrants to the Arch of Triumph competition this week, which is always nice to see – with the likes of Houston Hobby (HOU), Belize City (BZE) and San Jose del Cabo (SJD) joining the world family of FTWAs by sending in their first ever entries to anna.aero. Just a reminder that for the next two weeks heralding the start of the W15/16 season, anna.aero readers, rather than the regular judges, will be making the decision on the best weekly FTWA. So get your airport’s marketing teams at the ready to harness the power of social media and win. Keep Monitoring!!

Indonesia AirAsia X Denpasar to Sydney 17 October

David Bell at Sydney has clearly been playing with his new drone again…and out on the apron with his camera too…

Judge’s Comments:  Talk about spoilt for choice. The first of the three double image FTWAs we were sent this week is from Sydney, and it would be a real tough decision for the anna.aero judges to pick the one picture to use. While the aerial shot is stunning and unique, the apron shot is one for the FTWA purists…and therefore the one that would be used in judging. In some ways, the aerial shot actually highlights the slight failings of the FTWA…as we can see that the left-hand side of the arch is encroaching over the aircraft fuselage…something that is not as evident with the ground shot…so in this case, less is more…but still good enough to win this week…

Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby to Cancún 15 October

Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby to Cancun 15 October

Do you think anyone will notice we are on the apron without hi-viz vests…? Nah… that rule doesn’t apply to marketing staff…

Judge’s Comments: This was a day to remember at Houston Hobby, as Southwest’s first international services from the airport took to the air on 15 October. The FTWA wasn’t that bad either, although being water arch purists, the anna.aero judges do like it front on (bumper stickers available in all tacky gift stores)…clearly the significance of the day was going to be marked in several of the new markets that the LCC was starting flights to…

Jonny: 7.8; Marc: 8.2; Paul: 8.5; Ralph: 6.5.

Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby to Belize City 15 October

Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby to Belize City 15 October

We’ve got our hi-viz vests on…and we’re in marketing…

Judge’s Comments: This is the first ever entry from Belize City, something which is to be applauded of course. We always love to welcome another member of the world family of FTWA. Just one piece of advice from anna.aero’s esteemed judges…a bit of coloured dye in the water (probably blue as it was for Southwest) would have really helped us to distinguish the water arch from the dreary sky behind. In a world when nothing is ever truly free…that piece of FTWA wisdom is just $999 (we have a special on this week)…

Jonny: 6.5; Marc: 7.1; Paul: 7.9; Ralph: 5.8.

Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby to San Jose del Cabo 15 October

Southwest Airlines Houston Hobby to San Jose del Cabo 15 October

Clearly siesta time for the San Jose del Cabo marketing team…as they are not on the apron at all…

Judge’s Comments:  Obviously not taking their inspiration from the mountains looming large in the distance over San Jose del Cabo, the airport’s firefighters have served up a bit of pancaked FTWA here for us. Fortunately the sweet filling (a Southwest inaugural service) does help. A little bit more angle on those water jets and we could have been seeing a top 10 contender…instead we have to settle for wanting more…a bit like me every pancake day…

Jonny: 8.9; Marc: 8.8; Paul: 9.5; Ralph: 8.4.

Austrian Airlines Vienna to Miami 16 October

No matter what angle you see it from…it doesn’t get any better unfortunately…

Judge’s Comments:  This is the second of our trio of double launch image FTWAs this week. The decision on which shot to choose here is pretty easy – the one where the aircraft is further away is the better picture, as we can (sort of) appreciate the arch a little better. Poor photographer positioning seems to be the primary issue here…although he/she can only work where Ops has allowed them to stand…so maybe the blame sits with them

Jonny: 5.4; Marc: 4.1; Paul: 7.8; Ralph: 5.0.

Airnorth Darwin to Alice Springs 19 October

It hot and its dry in Alice Springs…but not when there is a new service to launch…

Judge’s Comments: The last of this week’s two-picture trio. Did someone drop the camera in that first shot (which would have been the selected image)? It looks like these pictures have both been taken with the photographer lying on the ground…either that or they are not very tall…I mean we know the 30-seat EMB 120 is not the biggest aircraft…but there is no need to lie down so it looks bigger. Maybe those fire tenders are toy ones too…my boys will be adding them to their Christmas lists as I write this…

Jonny: 8.0; Marc: 6.9; Paul: 7.0; Ralph: 8.5.
