As this year’s competition draws to a close, the anna.aero judges thought it might be quite interesting to see which were the most popular airlines to receive an FTWA this year. Way out in front with an impressive 14 FTWAs for its route launches in 2015 is Wizz Air, leaving Vueling (11), Allegiant Air (nine) and Norwegian (seven) trailing in its wake. There were also a whole host of airlines (Air China, Aeromexico, Adria Airways, Ryanair, easyJet, Czech Airlines, Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways) all of which notched up a very creditable six outings each, just going to prove the global appeal of this competition. Keep Monitoring!!

Air China Chengdu to Paris CDG 12 December

One of the anna.aero judges is responsible for this picture…so no excuses then…

Judge’s Comments: Yes our roving reporter (he’s in Rome or Istanbul or mid-air as I type this) Jonathan Ford took this picture on a very grey day in Paris last weekend…so there can be no excuses in terms of the structure of this image…which to be fair there isn’t. Both tenders are visible, as is the Air China aircraft and its livery. He has clearly coached the fire crews as well…the result is the Parisian mega hub’s first ever Arch of Triumph win…

Copa Airlines Panama City to Belize City 8 December

Which aircraft is the ground crew guy actually waving at…or is it his girlfriend…and what is she doing in the fire truck…

Which aircraft is the ground crew guy actually waving at…or is it his girlfriend…and what is she doing in the fire truck…?

Judge’s Comments: Is the ground crew guy actually giving some external guidance on the structure of the FTWA from his vantage point on the apron?? Left water jet is fine…right arch is low. One can only hope that the pilot knew this…and didn’t end up on the grass!!

Jonny: 6.6; Marc: 6.5; Paul: 6.9; Ralph: 6.4.

Lufthansa Frankfurt to Cancún 8 December

You got us all outside to look at that arch…

You got us all outside to look at that arch…?

Judge’s Comments: It’s really embarrassing when you gather a crowd together saying ‘come and watch this, it’ll be great…’ only to produce something of a damp squib (literally). Seconds after this photo was taken…the fifty or so people gathered on the apron dwindled to one…the guy who said it’d be great…

Jonny: 4.1; Marc: 4.1; Paul: 4.5; Ralph: 3.7.

Royal Jordanian Amman to Ankara 8 December

You told us it would be an ERJ…and they sent an A321…

You told us it would be an ERJ…and they sent an A321…

Judge’s Comments: As is quite often the case, inaugural flights are operated with a bigger aircraft than the one scheduled to do the regular flights (nothing to do with the airline’s bosses wanting a bit more comfort on the flight…for work…not sleep of course!!)…but if that message does not filter down to the fire station you end up with an FTWA being constructed on the hoof (they can take weeks of careful preparation)…as a result this Ankara arch falls from contender to just average…

Jonny: 6.7; Marc: 6.8; Paul: 7.3; Ralph: 5.9.

Tigerair Australia Melbourne to Coffs Harbour 9 December

No prizes for second place…

No prizes for second place…

Judge’s Comments: Is that an easyJet or Spirit Airlines aircraft? Oh…Tigerair Australia you say…well you can’t tell that from this angle can you!! This is a great arch – a bit angular, but pretty sound. But we have no idea of what airline it is…just looks like a white A320. That’s why this FTWA secures second place only…

Jonny: 8.4; Marc: 8.2; Paul: 8.6; Ralph: 8.5.

JetBlue Airways Fort Lauderdale to Albany 10 December

To double arch or not to double arch…that is the question…

To double arch or not to double arch…that is the question…

Judge’s Comments: If you are planning to go all out and double arch your JetBlue Airways inaugural service, then at least make sure the crews in both tenders are in the loop on the plan…otherwise it just looks messy and uncoordinated…a bit like how I look in the office…

Jonny: 6.8; Marc: 7.0; Paul: 7.4; Ralph: 6.1.

All Nippon Airways Tokyo Haneda to Sydney 11 December

This isn’t the FTWA you are looking for (Star Wars geeks will get that)…

This isn’t the FTWA you are looking for (Star Wars geeks will get that)…

Judge’s Comments: A long time ago (last week) in a galaxy far, far away (Australia is pretty far away)…not happy with the fact that it has second and third spots in the 2015 competition…Sydney has now gone to the extremes of using the force and Jedi mind tricks on the anna.aero judges to secure victory over the Empire…but we are not weak-minded Stormtroopers that can be outwitted that easily you know…

Jonny: 7.0; Marc: 7.7; Paul: 8.1; Ralph: 5.3.

easyJet London Gatwick to Friedrichshafen 12 December

This FTWA had a little help from Santa…

This FTWA had a little help from Santa…

Judge’s Comments: It must be something to do with the time of year…we’ve had one FTWA utilising mind control (Jedi mind tricks) as well as a binding, metaphysical, and ubiquitous power (the force) to craft a winning arch, whereas this route launch in Germany enlisted the help of a jolly man in red suit. While his help did produce an arch that his sleigh would be proud of on final approach to a child’s house…it only secured third spot this week from the anna.aero judges…bah humbug!!

Jonny: 7.8; Marc: 8.0; Paul: 8.4; Ralph: 7.0.

Gulf Air Bahrain to Multan 14 December

We genuinely have no idea what is going on in this picture…neither do those four guys in the foreground…

We genuinely have no idea what is going on in this picture…neither do those four guys in the foreground…

Judge’s Comments: There is plenty happening in this picture…water jets everywhere…but it’s almost as if the Gulf Air aircraft has slipped past on an alternate taxiway…or that the pilot wasn’t expecting the FTWA and just made haste to the awaiting gate and ground crew…steward’s inquiry is needed in Multan…for the second lowest scoring FTWA of the year…

Jonny: 1.6; Marc: 2.3; Paul: 1.1; Ralph: 1.3.
