10 more airports slug it out for 2015 Arch of Triumph honours
A bit like panic purchases in the lingerie department on Christmas Eve, at the last moment, due to the sheer volume of route launches over the festive season, we decided to send out another newsletter pre-holidays. This has given another seven airports eight chances (one airport has sent us two arches this week) to scoop the title in the final throws of the 2015 Arch of Triumph competition. There were certainly a couple of great efforts this week, including Sydney Airport’s last throw of the dice (it has no more route launches this year), which has entered FTWAs in three out of the last four weeks of competition. The title, it seems, is destined to be headed for Birmingham in the UK Midlands. However, there will be one final chance for the world’s airports to steal the crown it has clung onto since early October. Keep Monitoring (for one more week)!!

Pobeda Moscow Vnukovo to Milan/Bergamo 21 December
Judge’s Comments: This could have smashed apart the 2015 Arch of Triumph competition if the picture had just been taken 10 seconds earlier. Così vicino Milan/Bergamo…così vicino…

Emirates Dubai to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen 15 December
Judge’s Comments: This is Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen’s first ever wide-body service, so it is also likely to be its first ever wide-body FTWA. This may have something to do with the slight gap (about 10 metres!) between the two water jets on display here. That said, extra points will have been awarded for a reasonable attempt at a night shot…and the fact that one of the anna.aero judges took the picture…

Allegiant Air Fort Lauderdale to Grand Rapids 16 December
Judge’s Comments: With a name like Grand Rapids, you can’t go wrong surely when constructing an FTWA. The city, Michigan’s second largest after Detroit, developed on the banks of the Grand River, where there was once a set of rapids. Ships could navigate on the river up to this fall line, stopping because of the rapids. Just goes to show, that every day is a school day…

National Airlines Orlando Sanford to San Juan 16 December
Judge’s Comments: Having initially been seen in the Cayman Islands…and then in the Dallas/Fort Worth area a couple of weeks ago…the latest craze in FTWAs has made it to Florida…yes the Kim Kardashian has arrived in the Sunshine State. The anna.aero judges are still not sure whether these FTWAs – which are presented with the aircraft posterior having prominence ‒ are crafted in this manner, or whether they are as a result of tardy photographers…

easyJet Amsterdam to Lyon 17 December
Judge’s Comments: Nature certainly came up with the goods on this cold and crisp morning in Lyon for the arrival of the easyJet flight from Amsterdam, with this beautiful sunrise. Mother Nature at her best ‒ see below for when she becomes mischievous. If only the airport’s fire crew had come up with the FTWA goods as well…

National Airlines Orlando Sanford to Windsor 17 December
Judge’s Comments: It looks like we can see 7.6% of the right-hand water jet in this shot. That means the maximum score from that half of the FTWA can only be 0.38…for which I have given it full marks. If only we could have just seen the remaining 92.4% of that right-hand side…
Jonny: 3.2; Marc: 3.6; Paul: 4.0; Ralph: 3.7.
American Airlines Charlotte Douglas to Curaçao 19 December
Judge’s Comments: You can plan route launches to the nth degree…get everything perfect and in place to maximise the marketing power of this landmark event. However, a bit like children and animals on TV shows and old people at family weddings, you cannot predict what Mother Nature will do at a route launch…here she is at her most mischievous…screwing up weeks of planning by the airport’s marketing department and countless hours of FTWA training…see how they have angled the water jets to no avail…
Jonny: 4.5; Marc: 3.5; Paul: 3.9; Ralph: 3.4.
American Airlines Chicago O’Hare to Punta Cana 19 December
Judge’s Comments: Only last week in this feature we did a review of the most popular airlines receiving FTWAs during 2015, with Wizz Air winning hands down with 14. If we had had these four arches for American Airlines last week the carrier would have shared fourth spot with Norwegian with seven FTWAs. Incidentally Allegiant Air, courtesy of this week’s offering from Grand Rapids, now has 10, just one behind Vueling in second…
Jonny: 4.2; Marc: 6.0; Paul: 6.4; Ralph: 6.2.
American Airlines Dallas/Fort Worth to Punta Cana 19 December
Judge’s Comments: As you will see in the previous FTWA from Punta Cana, the right-hand tender has suffered from a mild case of what is known in Arch of Triumph circles as Big Boy, Little Boy. As a result, in this FTWA from the same airport the fire crews have attempted to address that issue, but have instead over-corrected…and gone too high. Nice rainbow though…
Jonny: 4.2; Marc: 6.4; Paul: 6.8; Ralph: 6.8.
American Airlines Los Angeles to Sydney 19 December
Judge’s Comments: The Sydney Airport fire crews have got to be amongst the busiest in the business at the moment…not the business of attending emergencies (thank goodness)…but the ceremonial FTWA provision business. In a desperate bid to secure the 2015 Arch of Triumph title, the Australian airport has offered entries in three of the last four weeks…close but no cigar again this week…
