In order to promote its new service from Baltimore/Washington to Orlando, Spirit Airlines held a “Spirit-aneous Giveaway”, which involved prospective passengers giving their name to the airline to be entered into a lucky dip, with a chance to win seats on the first flight to Orlando. The lucky winner also had to be at the airport ready in case they won the tickets. Ricky Smith, Baltimore/Washington Airport CEO, then conducted the draw to name the lucky passenger before boarding commenced.
- Spirit Airlines commenced operations between Baltimore/Washington (BWI) and Orlando (MCO) on 7 January. The airline will serve the 1,268-kilometre sector with a daily rotation with its fleet of A319s. The route will face direct competition from Southwest Airlines (65 weekly flights) and JetBlue Airways (daily flights). With the launch of Orlando services, Spirit Airlines now serves a total of 10 routes from Baltimore/Washington, with destinations 11 and 12, Boston and Detroit, planned to be launching on 21 April.
