Week six of the 2016 Arch of Triumph sees Asia take on Europe

Just a word on the truly global scoring of this week’s FTWAs, as two judges are currently sat in their respective hotel rooms in San Juan, Puerto Rico (while attending Routes Americas), one judge has sent his scores while enjoying some après-ski in Cortina, Italy, while the other one is at home in Oxfordshire. All for you, our lucky readers. With 20 Arch of Triumph entries received so far in the 2016 competition, Asia has been the most prolific region, sending 30% of all FTWAs, with Australasia in second spot with 25%. Africa and Europe, then lead the chasing pack of regions, with 15% of all entries each. It is only the second time that weekly winner Wuhan has provided us with an FTWA for a route launch, the first time being in 2015, when the Chinese airport finished sixth out of seven airports with a score of 27.0. This week its score is lower, but it scoops the weekly win. Funny old game this Arch of Triumph lark. Keep Monitoring!!

A trifle windy in Wuhan…China’s very own Chicago…

Judge’s Comments: The elements often conspire to defeat even the most resplendent FTWA structures…which certainly seems to have happened here in Wuhan, where the wind has been a devil to control. Indeed the city is sometimes known as the Chicago of China…perhaps because of the winds rolling in off the eastern Jianghan Plain…just as the US version is known as ‘The Windy City’…or maybe it has something to do with the great deep pan pizzas available in both cities instead…?

Two very different jets of water…one near vertical…the other near horizontal…

Judge’s Comments: Clearly there was a disagreement at Cologne Bonn’s fire station…that may have gone something like this ‒ Wolfgang: “We will do an FTWA that evokes thoughts of our fine cathedral in Cologne…” Helmut: “Nein, we did that last time, so let’s do one that will remind all that see it of the majestic River Rhein that flows through the centre of our beautiful city…” We are unable to share the rest of this transcript with you, as the language was even too coarse for anna.aero’s judge’s ears…
