Not one but two airports show off their Arch of Triumph certificates

Inverness Airport

On 17 May Inverness Airport in Scotland became better connected to the world when KLM started flights to its Amsterdam hub. The airport also scooped its first ever Arch of Triumph win in the process.

Lisbon Airport

Not only has Lisbon Airport won its second Arch of Triumph award, but it now sits at the top of the 2016 leader board having amassed the highest ever FTWA score of 39 out of 40! No wonder they all look so happy – Bom Trabalho!!

In last year’s Arch of Triumph, by the end of the first week of June, the 2015 competition had seen 110 FTWAs battle it out in 17 weeks of duelling. By the same week this year, we have had three more weeks of competition and 167 FTWAs – that’s 52% more than 12 months ago. Europe leads the way with 85 entries (51%) so far, followed by North America (20%) and Asia (11%). It is therefore no surprise that Europe leads the inter-regional tussle for supremacy, with 11 (55%) from 20 wins, way ahead of Australasia with three (15%), the Middle East and Asia with two (both 10%). It’s getting harder to break onto the leader board too, with this week’s winner Vilnius scraping into 10th spot with a score of 35.1. This time last year, they would have been in third with a result like that. Keep Monitoring!!

The eighth wonder of the natural world…?

Judge’s Comments: Maybe your favourite natural wonder of the world is the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef or Victoria Falls…for anna.aero’s judges it’s a unanimous vote for an FTWA with a rainbow…and we’ve had plenty of them in our four years of competition, but none of them as brilliant as this one in Vilnius…the question is now…will the tourists flock there to this wonder…

Frontier Airlines Denver to Columbus 31 May

Frontier Airlines Denver to Columbus 31 May

There is nothing ULCC about this FTWA…

Judge’s Comments:  While the airline itself might be scrabbling down the backs of its seats to save every dime and nickel…Columbus produced an FTWA of high value and quality for the arrival of Frontier Airlines’ service from Denver. At least the water jets were not a Mile High…

Jonny: 8.2; Marc: 8.4; Paul: 8.3; Ralph: 8.8.

Aeroflot Moscow Sheremetyevo to Alicante 1 June

Aeroflot Moscow Sheremetyevo to Alicante 1 June

The first of three European FTWAs for Aeroflot…

Judge’s Comments:  Right, so we have a competition in a competition, with three European airports all welcoming new services from Aeroflot in the traditional way with an FTWA. First thing to notice is a distinct lack of apron clutter in all three, which is always good for keeping the scores up…

Jonny: 7.3; Marc: 7.6; Paul: 7.9; Ralph: 7.7.

Aeroflot Moscow Sheremetyevo to Lyon 1 June

Aeroflot Moscow Sheremetyevo to Lyon 1 June

The second of three FTWAs for the SkyTeam carrier…

Judge’s Comments: France’s entry for this mini-competition is a little more provocative than those provided at the Spanish airports…with this rear-shot of the aircraft…now commonly-known in the Arch of Triumph world as a ‘Kim Kardashian’…this style is yet to find universal appeal with the anna.aero judges…although one seems to like it significantly more than the others…

Jonny: 3.1; Marc: 5.6; Paul: 4.3; Ralph: 9.4.

Aeroflot Moscow Sheremetyevo to Valencia 1 June

Aeroflot Moscow Sheremetyevo to Valencia 1 June

…and this one in Valencia makes three…

Judge’s Comments: The Spanish airport loses some points here for the incursion from the follow-me vehicle…which impacts on the symmetry of the picture…and means that the airport just 130 kilometres down the coast wins the competition within the competition for the Aeroflot launches this week…

Jonny: 6.1; Marc: 6.9; Paul: 5.3; Ralph: 9.2.

Air Canada Vancouver to Brisbane 1 June

Air Canada Vancouver to Brisbane 1 June

Talk about an imposing sky scape…

Judge’s Comments: The guys at Brisbane had already sent in one FTWA for their new Air Canada route…but then a few hours later they sent this much improved one through…an image that they described as the ‘money shot’…well you can certainly see what they mean…full-on drama with this brooding sky…

Jonny: 7.2; Marc: 7.4; Paul: 7.9; Ralph: 7.2.

Blue Air Bucharest to Castellon 1 June

Blue Air Bucharest to Castellon 1 June

Is that a replacement nose cone on the aircraft…or just a dirty one…?

Judge’s Comments: One of anna.aero’s judges has been on board two inaugural flights into the Spanish regional airport of Castellon…this time on Blue Air from Bucharest (last time it was Ryanair)…if you want to read his full first flight report…and see this FTWA from the inside of the aircraft…you know what to do

Jonny: 9.0; Marc: 5.3; Paul: 3.4; Ralph: 3.5.

Norwegian Palma de Mallorca to Madrid 1 June

Norwegian Palma de Mallorca to Madrid 1 June

A big piece of route development calls for a big FTWA…

Judge’s Comments: When an airline with the prestige of Norwegian decides to open a base at your airport, you should be prepared to go the extra yard when it comes to promoting that momentous decision…including carefully crafting a fantastic FTWA worthy of the occasion…this one falls well short of the mark…

Jonny: 5.5; Marc: 6.2; Paul: 6.1; Ralph: 6.9.

Qatar Airways Doha to Atlanta 1 June

Qatar Airways Doha to Atlanta 1 June

Where did that thing come from…??

Judge’s Comments: Ordinarily this 12,000 kilometre route from Doha to Atlanta will see Qatar Airways utilise its 777-200LRs…but of course on the first flight…they bring in the shiny new A380 because there are some VIPs on board…this piece of information seems to have not been passed on to Atlanta’s fire crews…as their FTWA is dwarfed by the double decker…

Jonny: 3.1; Marc: 2.8; Paul: 3.7; Ralph: 2.2.

RusLine St. Petersburg to Oslo Gardermoen 1 June

RusLine St. Petersburg to Oslo Gardermoen 1 June

That is one brightly coloured aeroplane…job lot of red paint left in the hangar perhaps…?

Judge’s Comments: Maybe Oslo’s fire crews were dazzled by the bright red RusLine CRJ…and that resulted in an FTWA which was far from being a bright spark to illuminate the Arch of Triumph world…one thing is for certain…the passengers would definitely not struggle to find the aircraft on the apron when getting ready to board…

Jonny: 6.5; Marc: 6.1; Paul: 6.5; Ralph: 5.3.

Blue Air Bacau to Stuttgart 2 June

Blue Air Bacau to Stuttgart 2 June

I am sure that I left my sandwiches up here…

Judge’s Comments: Not to be outdone by three FTWAs for three new Aeroflot services…Romania’s Blue Air is looking to beat the SkyTeam carrier, with this the second of its four arches this week. Let’s not forget that the LCC is already top of the ‘Which airline has received the most FTWAs in 2016’ table…when it received seven in one week back in April for the start of S16…so this week it extends its lead still further…

Jonny: 2.2; Marc: 4.0; Paul: 4.3; Ralph: 5.5.

Blue Air Bucharest to Lisbon 2 June

Blue Air Bucharest to Lisbon 2 June

League leaders Lisbon at it again…

Judge’s Comments: As is so often the case in this competition, a week of fame and glory is quickly brought back down to earth with a bump during the next seven days…and that is exactly what has happened in Portugal this week. League leaders Lisbon have a dramatic night shot on offer this week…but it’s not a patch on what they achieved last week for United…

Jonny: 7.0; Marc: 6.5; Paul: 6.5; Ralph: 6.0.

Condor Munich to Halifax 3 June

Condor Munich to Halifax 3 June

767-300 aircraft wash…only C$50….Q400 wash…only C$30…

Judge’s Comments: A nice little aeronautical revenue side-line our friends at Halifax have got going here…total aircraft wash for this Condor 767-300 was just C$50…this would have at least covered some of the marketing money splashed out on the cupcakes for the launch

Jonny: 4.8; Marc: 6.0; Paul: 8.5; Ralph: 4.8.

Blue Air Constanta to Athens 4 June

Blue Air Constanta to Athens 4 June

The fourth and final instalment from the Blue Air tetralogy…

Judge’s Comments: You can say all you want about technology, IT and the internet…but Google is blummin’ amazing when it comes to finding out stuff…helped me find out what a series of four items is…a tetralogy. That said some people suggested it was called a quadrilogy…so in the end I still used old technology (my dictionary) to see which was right…

Jonny: 7.8; Marc: 8.5; Paul: 8.4; Ralph: 9.2.
