Budapest celebrates back-to-back Arch of Triumph victories
With one entry this week, and indeed another win, Australasia keeps up its impressive strike rate so far in 2016. With 13 entries all year (from a possible 199), but four weekly winners from that selection, this region clearly delivers on quality and not quantity, as it has provided 7% of all attempts, but 17% of winners. These results also give Australasia a win/entry rate of 0.308, beaten only by the Middle East’s score of 0.5, which is generated from two wins from just four efforts in 2016. Auckland’s win also sees New Zealand take two of the top four placings, with Australia snapping up a third. Germany also has two winners inside the top 11, but lower down the rankings. So evidently, FTWAs from down under are the ones setting the highest global standard in this year’s competition. Keep Monitoring!!

American Airlines Los Angeles to Auckland 23 June
Judge’s Comments: When they are well-lit…and this one is…night shots can be awesome. As this flight links Hollywood with Middle Earth, no doubt there were lots of grumpy orcs sat up front in business class…giving the Elfin crew grief…but there was certainly plenty of FTWA wizardry on display here in Auckland…enough to secure victory over the forces of Mordor (this week anyway)…

Aegean Airlines Athens to Krakow 21 June
Judge’s Comments: For any of you that have tried playing snooker (or indeed billiards) you will know the challenge of playing on a 12ft (3.7m) by 6ft (1.8m) table. The playing surface is immense, particularly when compared to pool (which far more people have played)…and it is therefore more difficult. However, like pool, it’s all about understanding angles…something which has not been exhibited here in Krakow…

Copa Airlines Panama City to Holguin 21 June
Judge’s Comments: The Caribbean is the least prolific (a bit like England strikers) of all the regions of the world which send through FTWAs, having notched just three so far in 2016. So when one comes along…you want to savour it…but this one just leaves a bitter taste in the mouth…nice flags though…

Germania Erfurt to Corfu 21 June
Judge’s Comments: The first and only time before this week that we have had an FTWA from Erfurt was also for a new Germania route…and also to Greece (last time it was to Rhodes). That time it averaged a score of 7.1…for a total of 28.4…it did marginally worse this week with 28.0…so a step backwards unfortunately…

Vueling Rome Fiumicino to Tallinn 21 June
Judge’s Comments: The Roman Empire never made it to the Baltics, but that did not stop the firefighters at Tallinn paying homage to the Italian’s skills as architects and builders with this coliseum-inspired FTWA…for the launch of Vueling’s route from Rome Fiumicino…thank goodness that the real thing has archways which are 100% complete…

Azul Airlines Sao Paulo Viracopos to Lisbon 22 June
Judge’s Comments: Having narrowly beaten Croatia in the Round of 16 match at Euro 2016 on Saturday night (1-0 during extra time) perhaps minds were elsewhere three days earlier in the week at Lisbon. However, with the Portuguese airport currently sitting top of the leader board in the 2016 Arch of Triumph competition maybe this is a sign of further victories ahead for the national football team…next up…Poland…

Bahamasair Freeport to Orlando 22 June
Judge’s Comments: Typically hurricanes in Florida arrive any time between June and October, with the most likely months being between August and October. So it’s perhaps a little bit early in the season for the first one here in Orlando…but there definitely seems to be some sort of cloudburst above the Bahamasair 737…

Air Serbia Belgrade to New York JFK 23 June
Judge’s Comments: With one of the world’s best-known skylines to fill the background of any route launch in New York, you would have thought that the JFK station commander would have leveraged that advantage for maximum FTWA impact. Instead, we have a few buildings straggled out in the middle distance…and an uninspiring water arch…
Jonny: 6.5; Marc: 5.1; Paul: 5.9; Ralph: 2.9.
China Eastern Airlines Shanghai Pudong to Prague 23 June
Judge’s Comments: One of China’s big three hub carriers, China Eastern Airlines, has started flights to three European cities this week, and we have FTWAs from two of them – the first is from Prague. But which will do best? This is the Czech capital’s third FTWA entry so far this year…but this one does not quite match up to the 32.8 scored recently for the Air Canada Rouge launch…but will it be enough to beat Amsterdam??
Jonny: 8.3; Marc: 8.1; Paul: 7.1; Ralph: 8.8.
Helvetic Airways Zurich to Tromsø 24 June
Judge’s Comments: This style of FTWA has not been mentioned for many months, but with a route launch from Switzerland, it is of no surprise that Tromsø’s marketing department insisted on a ‘Toblerone’ arch for the start of Helvetic’s services from Zurich. Maybe this route should be marketed as the Mountain Express? If anyone at Mondelez International (formerly Kraft Foods, and owner of the Toblerone brand) is reading this…all of anna.aero’s data elves love this type of chocolate more than any other…
Jonny: 7.5; Marc: 7.6; Paul: 8.0; Ralph: 7.2.
TAROM Iasi to Madrid 25 June
Judge’s Comments: So often, when we receive FTWAs from around the world, there is a huge expanse of grey apron concrete in the foreground, which, if it’s a grey day…makes the whole picture a bit drab. Not in Iasi in Romania…where we have lots of grass instead!! Extra points there…
Jonny: 7.6; Marc: 7.7; Paul: 7.1; Ralph: 8.3.
China Eastern Airlines Shanghai Pudong to Amsterdam 26 June
Judge’s Comments: It was pretty close in the end, with the two European capitals split by just one point…but victory went to the Dutch for its FTWA for China Eastern. As a result, the hub also secured second place this week too…with a score of 33.3
Jonny: 8.0; Marc: 8.3; Paul: 8.5; Ralph: 8.5.
Condor Frankfurt to Austin-Bergstrom 27 June
Judge’s Comments: In recent years, some Austinites have adopted the unofficial slogan “Keep Austin Weird”. While it originally referred to promoting small businesses in the city, its use has spread further, now including the airport’s FTWA entries. So here’s to Austin for keeping it weird!!
Jonny: 5.5; Marc: 6.9; Paul: 7.4; Ralph: 7.7.
