Thai AirAsia has become the second member of the AirAsia Group of airlines to serve Vientiane in Laos. AirAsia began flying there from Kuala Lumpur in December 2007.
- Thai AirAsia has begun serving Vientiane (VTE) in Laos from its Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK) base. The inaugural flight departed on 1 July. The 499-kilometre sector will be flown daily using the LCC’s A320s and will face no direct competition. However, Lao Airlines and Thai Airways (both twice-daily) and Bangkok Airways (daily) all offer direct flights between Vientiane and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. Vientiane joins Luang Prabang to become the second destination in Laos to be served by the LCC. This summer Thai AirAsia will be serving 47 destinations non-stop from Bangkok Don Mueang, up from 42 last summer. According to OAG Schedules Analyser data, the carrier accounts for 40% of capacity at Bangkok’s second airport, well ahead of Nok Air (22%) and Thai Lion Air (19%). Thai AirAsia is not the first member of the AirAsia Group of airlines to serve Vientiane, as AirAsia has been serving the city from Kuala Lumpur since December 2007.
