A traditional route launch cake was had at New York JFK to celebrate the arrival of TAP Portugal’s new service from Lisbon. The 5,401-kilometre route will be served daily. Although no direct competition is offered, fellow Star Alliance member United Airlines links the Portuguese capital to New York Newark.
- TAP Portugal launched service to New York JFK (JFK) on 1 July, its second US service after Boston. Flights from Lisbon (LIS) will be operated daily on the carrier’s A330-200 fleet. Although no direct competition is offered on the 5,401-kilometre airport pair, indirect competition comes in the form of United Airlines which offers service between the Portuguese capital and New York Newark. The 1 July was also the day on which TAP Portugal launched a second service from Lisbon, a daily 385-kilometre service to Vigo (VGO) in Spain. Facing no direct competition, the route will be flown on ATR 72s operated by White Airways. TAP Portugal now serves 12 destinations in Spain from Lisbon. As well as Vigo the Star Alliance carrier also serves A Coruna, Asturias, Barcelona, Bilbao, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Madrid, Malaga, Santander, Seville and Valencia.
