Malindo Air makes Medan newest route from Malaysia
Malindo Air has expanded its network in Indonesia with the launch on 29 August of daily flights between its Kuala Lumpur (KUL) base and Medan (KNO). The short 330-kilometre route will be flown by the LCC’s 737-800s. Competition will come from AirAsia (thrice-daily flights), Indonesia AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines (both with twice-daily flights). This is Malindo Air’s fourth route to Indonesia from its Kuala Lumpur (Sepang) base as it already serves Bandung, Jakarta and Denpasar (Bali). However, it also serves Batam from its Kuala Lumpur (Subang) base and Pekanbaru from Malacca. On routes between Malaysia and Indonesia, Malindo Air has around 9% of the market in terms of seat capacity ranking it fourth behind AirAsia (34%), Indonesia AirAsia (15%) and Malaysia Airlines (15%), but ahead of Lion Air (8%) and Indonesia AirAsia X (8%). Indonesia’s flag-carrier Garuda has less than 4% of the market.
