Myanmar Airways International starts first international route from Mandalay

On Saturday 3 September Myanmar Airways International launched its first international route from Mandalay, to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi. The carrier operates four international routes from the capital, Yangon.

  • Myanmar Airways International on 3 September began operating a thrice-weekly (Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays) service between Mandalay (MDL) and Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK). The 1,024-kilometre route will be operated by the airline’s A319s. Bangkok Airways (daily flights) and Myanmar National Airlines (thrice-weekly flights) also serve this airport pair. Myanmar Airways International already serves Bangkok twice-daily from Yangon. This is the airline’s fifth international route, but first from Mandalay. From Yangon it also serves Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. According to OAG Schedules Analyser data for September 2016 a total of eight carriers operate between Myanmar and Thailand. Based on seat capacity Myanmar Airways International has just 8% of the market, well behind Bangkok Airways, the market leader, with 23% of seats.
