First entry for this European airport secures win for the Finns
You can tell what a big deal attracting a MEB3 (Middle East Big 3 – Emirates, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways) carrier is for most airports around the world. For Helsinki, Finland’s capital city, it meant its first ever entry in the Arch of Triumph competition. It went the whole hog too…winning the weekly trophy at its first attempt and also sneaking into the top 10 (in 10th position). Suuri tavaraa!! In the process, Qatar Airways has won its second weekly title of 2016, joining United Airlines and Wizz Air with this prestigious accolade. As the 2016 competition closes in on its 300th entry, Europe is still providing the majority of FTWAs, having reached the 150-mark (52% of total entries) this week. North America is a clear second with 64 airports (22%) taking part so far this year, with Asia some distance behind in third, with 28 entries (10%). Keep Monitoring!!

Qatar Airways Doha to Helsinki 10 October 2016
Judge’s Comments: Ordinarily, the anna.aero judges tend to prefer seeing FTWAs head-on…as it gives us the best perspective on the arch. We don’t mind images taken from other angles, but airports doing this should know it’s a risky business…as we like to see other elements as a result of this shift in photographer position. Fortunately for Helsinki Airport operator Finavia, it has delivered by making sure the close-in tender is in shot…and that the branding is clearly displayed. The arch isn’t bad either…and a worthy weekly winner…

AirAsia X Kuala Lumpur to Mauritius 4 October
Judge’s Comments: The above question is an important one, as we of course have an inter-regional element to the Arch of Triumph competition. Along with the Maldives, the anna.aero judges struggle with remembering which region Mauritius falls under, given their location in the Indian Ocean. For those of you still reading, Mauritius being not far off the coast of Madagascar is classified as Africa, while the Maldives, being south of India, is counted as part of Asia. Geography lesson over…

SpiceJet Kolkata to Aizawl 4 October
Judge’s Comments: Aizawl is the capital and largest city of the state of Mizoram in the north-east of India. To give you an idea of how far north and east it is in India, the state shares a border with Bangladesh and Myanmar. It is perhaps fitting that hills provide the backdrop to this FTWA image, as Mizoram literally translated means ‘land of the hill people’…Mi (people), Zo (lofty place such as a hill) and Ram (land)…so now you know…

SpiceJet Kolkata to Silchar 4 October
Judge’s Comments: Perhaps the other fire crew at Silchar who should have been manning the left-hand tender were watching a re-run of ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ ‒ the most popular TV show in India this year. The Zee TV show follows the life of a Punjabi matriarch Sarla Arora, who runs a marriage hall and lives with the hope of seeing her two daughters Pragya and Bulbul, who are poles apart, happily married someday…

Allegiant Air Orlando Sanford to Ogdensburg 5 October
Judge’s Comments: One thing that can be said about airlines like Allegiant Air, it certainly brings to the fore airports like Ogdensburg in New York State. This route, along with another which the ULCC also started this week from Fort Lauderdale, represent the first services launched from the airport in the last three years (according to our data anyway). Indeed, regional carrier Cape Air, which flies into the airport 21 times weekly from Albany is currently the only other airline offering scheduled services. So for a first attempt…this is not a bad effort Ogdensburg…
