AirAsia Berhad celebrated its inaugural flight between Johor Bahru and Jakarta on 10 January. The three times weekly service faces no direct competition and brings the number of destinations served non-stop by AirAsia Group at Johor Bahru to 11.
- AirAsia on 10 January introduced a new three times weekly service (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays) on the 922-kilometre route between Johor Bahru (JHB) in southern Malaysia and Jakarta (CGK) in Indonesia. The LCC will use its A320s on the route which is not served by any other carrier. AirAsia now serves 10 destinations non-stop from Johor Bahru; six domestic ones in Malaysia and four international ones, the other three being Bangkok Don Mueang (Thailand), Guangzhou (China) and Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam). In addition Indonesia AirAsia connects Johor Bahru to Surabaya in Indonesia. Spencer Lee, Head of Commercial for AirAsia Berhad, said: “We remain committed towards growing the connectivity from our southern hub of Johor Bahru, which started with only domestic flights and today marks the AirAsia Group’s fifth international flight connecting Johor Bahru to cities around the region. In 2016 alone, we have flown over two million passengers in and out of Johor Bahru and this number will grow even further with the commencement of this route. We will look into more international connectivity for our southern hub and hope to launch more exciting destinations from Johor Bahru in the near future.” Between Indonesia and Malaysia AirAsia accounts for 34% of seat capacity making it the leading carrier, followed by Indonesia AirAsia (15%), Malaysia Airlines (14%), Malindo Air and Lion (each with 10%) and Indonesia AirAsia X with 8%.
