Hainan Airlines has started its first route to Sapporo Chitose (CTS) in Japan from Hangzhou (HGH). The three times weekly service (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) was launched on 23 January using the carrier’s 737-800s. The 2,343-kilometre is not served by any other airline. According to flightradar24.com the inaugural flight, which was supposed to depart Hangzhou at 07:40, departed just over three hours late, with the return flight almost four hours behind schedule. A second route to Sapporo from Changsha begins on 24 January. By the end of this week the carrier will be operating four routes (with 11 weekly flights) between China and Japan, giving it just 0.9% of the market and ranking it 15th, well behind China Eastern Airlines (22%), All Nippon Airways (17%) and Air China (15%).
