Birmingham Airport’s festivities for fifth FTWA victory

BHX Arch of Week winners

Receiving its fifth Arch of Triumph certificate are the 2015 Champions Birmingham Airport, represented by: Station Manager Corey Robbins; Firefighter Andrea Penniket; Firefighter Nick Jordan; Firefighter Terry Haynes; and Head of Fire & Emergency Planning John McCorry. Its latest victory was for the FTWA carefully-crafted for the launch of bmi regional’s flights to Graz in Austria.

Of the eight global regions which this competition officially recognises, seven have now won a weekly Arch of Triumph title, thanks to this week’s winner – Belo Horizonte in Brazil, South America. Asia is the only part of the world which has managed more than one victory (two), with the other six regions all mustering just one win each so far. Africa is the only region to have not won a weekly title in 2017, primarily because we have not had one entry from this part of this part of the world since January. In fact, South America’s airports have been the most prolific entrants this year, providing the anna.aero judges with seven of the 22 FTWAs supplied (32%). North America takes second spot (23%), followed by Europe and Asia (both 14%). Keep Monitoring!!

Azul Airlines Belo Horizonte to Buenos Aires Ezeiza 6 March

The first of two FTWAs for this new Azul Airlines route…the other one is right at the bottom…

Judges’ comments: The anna.aero judges loved the close-up feel to this FTWA…it’s almost like you are there…and that you can feel the spray from the arch hitting your face. Possible improvement? Yes…get the airport brand (presumably its logo is on the right-hand tender) in the picture next time…and you could have a world-beater and not just a weekly winner…

Jonny: 9.2; Marc: 9.2; Paul: 8.5; Ralph: 8.5.

SalamAir Muscat to Dubai Al Maktoum 28 February

A peaceful FTWA from Dubai Al Maktoum…

Judges’ comments: It always looks really quiet and peaceful at Dubai Al Maktoum Airport, like the only aircraft there is the one receiving the FTWA!! Quite a contrast to the hustle and bustle at world’s busiest international airport just down the road. What these periods of inactivity result in is a well-trained bunch of firefighters. These guys came a close second to the winner this week…must be all that time to practice…

Jonny: 8.9; Marc: 7.8; Paul: 7.9; Ralph: 8.1.

Hawaiian Airlines Honolulu to Kapalua 1 March

We can confirm that this FTWA is in Kapulua and not Kahului…despite what is on the side of the fire tender…

Judges’ comments: If you zoom in on the single fire tender above you can see (we must have lots of spare time on our hands) that it must have recently been transferred between Hawaiian airports, as it clearly says Kahului and not Kapulua, which is where we know the FTWA took place. Unless of course they brought the fire crew and the tender in for the launch event?? They are after all only 26 kilometres apart by air on the Hawaiian island of Maui…

Jonny: 5.1; Marc: 4.4; Paul: 4.4; Ralph: 5.6.

US Bangla Airlines Dhaka to Kuala Lumpur 2 March

US-Bangla Airlines Arch of Triumph

Not the best image we have used…and not the best FTWA we have received from KL…

Judges’ comments: This FTWA from Kuala Lumpur is clearly not their best, scoring just 26.5. Its only the third arch that we have received from the Malaysian capital city airport, the second being just three weeks ago, when it won the weekly title for the first time. This week’s result is nearly eight points lower than the score it achieved in mid-February. Bragging rights in the station therefore belong to that crew…and not the one on FTWA duty this week…

Jonny: 6.2; Marc: 7.2; Paul: 6.5; Ralph: 6.6.

Avianca Sao Paulo Guarulhos to Iguassu Falls 6 March

The biggest photo-bomb of an FTWA yet??

Judges’ comments: Clearly there was another flight getting ready to depart Iguassu Falls Airport when this Avianca aircraft was being baptised following its arrival from Sao Paulo. This image has to break all records for the number of people photo-bombing an FTWA ever…we have conservatively estimated well over 40 people in front of what is presumably the official photographer??

Jonny: 7.9; Marc: 8.5; Paul: 5.5; Ralph: 7.3.

Azul Airlines Belo Horizonte to Buenos Aires Ezeiza 6 March

The second Azul Airlines FTWA this week…we know which one we think is better…no competition really…

Judges’ comments: In the world of the Arch of Triumph competition, this type of FTWA is known as an ‘ear-wash’ as the water jet is less arch and more a device for cleaning the ears of the flight crew. At least on this one it’s just the First Officer receiving the intense personal hygiene regime from some of Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport’s finest…

Jonny: 4.5; Marc: 3.8; Paul: 3.3; Ralph: 2.8.
