Gran treats in Gran Canaria. Passengers on the first Jet2.com flights to Birmingham and London Stansted were offered some tasty goodies from the Canary Island as a memento of the inaugural flight. Our data elves noticed that there was a distinct lack of Birmingham landmarks on the London-focused cake however.

  • Jet2.com celebrated a major milestone on 30 March as its first ever flights launched from two new UK bases ‒ London Stansted (STN) and Birmingham (BHX). Since launching from Leeds Bradford in 2003, when it operated to 11 destinations, the LCC now operates from nine UK bases on over 300 routes. The inaugural flights from each base were the 06:50 from Stansted to Alicante (ALC), and the 09:00 from Birmingham to Malaga (AGP). At the London airport, Jet2.com will be operating to 27 destinations on seven based 737-800s by the end of the year, making Stansted the LCC’s fourth biggest UK base, with up to 96 weekly flights during the peak season. By the end of 2017 the Birmingham operation will fly to a total of 23 destinations on four 737-800s, delivering up to 57 weekly flights at peak times. Steve Heapy, Jet2.com CEO said: “We have got off to a flying start in every sense at London Stansted and Birmingham. Independent travel agents at both bases have responded fantastically to our family-friendly ethos and great value package holidays and from today their customers now get to experience this. Our formula of working in partnership with independent travel agents is proven, having driven phenomenal growth in northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland and we are very excited to be bringing this new approach to our new partners in the London Stansted and Birmingham catchment areas.” Alongside these base launches, the LCC strengthened its East Midlands (EMA) operation, with the start of four times weekly flights to Paris CDG (CDG) from 30 March.
