It’s a transatlantic battle in Week 31 of the Arch of Triumph competition

Europe has been very quiet during the past few weeks in regards to route launch celebrations, with not receiving an FTWA from an airport on the continent since the 1 August, the day on which SAS commenced its new seasonal link from Stockholm Arlanda to Shannon. However it has come back fighting this week with two FTWAs for two high-profile routes. Keep Monitoring!!

Qatar Airways Doha to Prague 21 August

Qatar Airways Prague

Prague pulls out the Toblerone to welcome MEB3 carrier #2…

Judges’ comments: Now for’s data elves, Toblerone is a special chocolate that is to be savoured for special occasions, particularly at Christmas when one may snap-off a triangular piece to celebrate the in-laws leaving after dinner. Therefore it seems fitting that Prague has pulled out this style of FTWA to greet its second MEB3 carrier…a moment just as exciting as sending the relatives home…

Air India Delhi to Stockholm Arlanda 15 August

Gone AWOL…where are the Arlanda tenders??

Judges’ comments: Having been present at an Air India route launch in the past, these events are normally far from flat…in my experience they featured dancing through the terminal building, loud drums and aircraft blessings. However, this FTWA is a bit flat…looks like the Chief Firefighter needs to recalculate his angles for the next big route launch…

Frontier Airlines Orlando to Long Island MacArthur 16 August

Frontier Airlines Islip

Specialist FTWA in New York State…

Judges’ comments: For those of you not familiar with your global FTWA styles, this is a local speciality FTWA known as the Long Island Iced Tea, with the colours on display reminiscent of the alcoholic beverage. Robert “Rosebud” Butt claims to have invented the Long Island Iced Tea as an entry in a contest to create a new mixed drink with triple sec in 1972 while he worked at the Oak Beach Inn on Long Island, New York. Little did “Rosebud” know that 45 years on he would also influence route launch celebrations too…

Avianca Cali to Bucaramanga 17 August

Avianca Bucaramanga

The ‘Beautiful City’ produces a beautiful FTWA…

Judges’ comments: For those of you that have not heard of Bucaramanga (we had not either), it is Colombia’s fifth largest city by GDP, has the lowest unemployment rate in the country and it has the ninth largest population, three factors that favour a new route venture. Nicknamed “Colombia’s Beautiful City” or “La Ciudad Bonita de Colombia” due to its 160 lush city parks, the airport has certainly produced a beautiful FTWA to celebrate Avianca’s new service from Cali…
