Laos beats all in Week 37 of 2017 Arch of Triumph

With three new entries into the top 10 over the last three weeks, the ante has certainly been raised in September between the worldwide airports battling it out for Arch of Triumph glory in 2017. Any airport looking to secure a position at the top table of airport new route marketing now needs to score more than 9.1 per judge, to achieve the 36.5 needed to break into the top 10. At the same point in last year’s competition, airports would have needed to score more than 36.8 to steal a spot among the world’s best marketing teams. Keep monitoring!!

China Southern Airlines Guangzhou to Vientiane 27 September

An FTWA masterclass from Denmark? The US? Australia? Nope…Laos…

Judges’ Comments: You would think that FTWAs from somewhere like Laos would be pretty unique, however, this is the third one we have received from airports in the South East Asia nation. Admittedly, this is only the third FTWA we have had from the country which neighbours Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, with the last two being for the same new triangular route launched last October by SilkAir. So while it’s hardly a glut of entries…it’s certainly more than we were expecting…and it was good enough to beat all-comers this week…

Azimuth Airline Omsk to Moscow Vnukovo 21 September

What is that fella doing…getting in the way of our picture…that’s what he is doing!!

Judges’ Comments: This is the first of two brand new airlines this week to receive an FTWA on what could be quite rightly called their ‘inaugural inaugural’ flight. Although, like Emirates this carrier’s name is not finished with Airlines…but just simply Airline. Either that was by design or they just spelt it wrong…and are just rolling with it now…

Jonny: 6.9; Kerry: 6.8; Marc: 6.7; Nick: 7.0.

Porter Airlines Toronto City (via Ottawa) to Saint John 21 September

Porter Airlines Saint John

Yeah mate…park that thing over here…

Judges’ Comments: Saint John is a city on the Bay of Fundy, in New Brunswick, Canada. It’s known for the Reversing Rapids, a phenomenon caused by bay tides colliding with the Saint John River. With such a massive gap in the two water jets, perhaps that is what has happened with this FTWA…it has gone into reverse…

Jonny: 6.2; Kerry: 6.5; Marc: 6.6; Nick: 6.4.

flyadeal Jeddah to Riyadh 23 September

flyadeal Riyadh

Ever wanted to know what a low-cost FTWA in Saudi Arabia looks like…well, now you know…

Judges’ Comments: The last FTWA that we received from Riyadh was for the launch of services of another Saudi Arabian LCC – Nesma Airlines in November 2016. Incidentally the FTWA was also on the same city pair between Jeddah and Riyadh. That time around Riyadh scored 21.1, finishing fourth out of the seven competing airports…this time…its fourth out of seven again…but with a score of 27.7.

Jonny: 7.0; Kerry: 7.2; Marc: 6.6; Nick: 6.9.

Atlasglobal Istanbul Atatürk to Moscow Sheremetyevo 25 September

Somewhere over the rainbow…there is an FTWA…

Judges’ Comments: This is probably one of the fullest rainbows that we have ever seen in an FTWA entry…pretty much 70% of it is visible. Beautiful as that natural phenomena is, it is let down by the construction of the arch…I say arch…but the FTWA is a bit too angular to be called an arch…and therefore points have had to be deducted…

Jonny: 7.6; Kerry: 8.3; Marc: 7.9; Nick: 8.0.

China Southern Airlines Guangzhou to Colombo 26 September

China Southern Airlines Colombo

What’s that…another China Southern aircraft receiving an FTWA??

Judges’ Comments:  You wait until the last week in September for the first FTWA this year featuring China’s biggest airline…and then…boooooom!…three in one week. Funny how that happens. Considering it is the world’s sixth biggest airline (in terms of weekly seats), we have only ever received seven China Southern water arches between 2013 and 2016…Wizz Air had clocked up that many this year by the first week in April…

Jonny: 5.5; Kerry: 6.7; Marc: 6.2; Nick: 6.9

China Southern Airlines Shenzhen to Moscow Sheremetyevo 28 September

China Southern Airlines Moscow

Completing the China Southern trio this week…is this one from Moscow Sheremetyevo…

Judges’ Comments: This FTWA from Russia’s busiest airport – Moscow Sheremetyevo – was narrowly beaten into third position by…wait for it…Moscow Sheremetyevo. Yep…the route launches are coming so thick and fast at the Russian capital airport that it is fighting against itself for Arch of Triumph glory…maybe next time it should target three new route FTWAs to ensure victory…

Jonny: 7.7; Kerry: 7.2; Marc: 7.5; Nick: 7.0.
