Middle East makes it win #2 in 2017 Arch of Triumph competition

With just nine entries so far this year, just 3% of the 300+ we have received, the Middle East can hardly be called prolific when it comes to providing the anna.aero judges with a healthy supply of FTWAs. However its win/entry ratio of 0.22 is only bettered by Australasia, which leads all of the global regions with an impressive tally of 0.25 – or one win for every four FTWAs sent in. So while the industry heavyweight Europe’s near-200 entries looks impressive on the surface, with 25 weekly wins under its belt, its win/entry ratio of 0.13 is only fourth-best, being beaten to third spot by Asia with its score of 0.19. Keep monitoring!!

SalamAir Muscat to Dubai 8 October

Only the second time in 2017 a Middle East airport has done the business…

Judges’ comments: The world’s busiest international airport wins this week’s Arch of Triumph welcoming yet another international service to its network. It joins Tel Aviv to become only the second winning FTWA from the Middle East in 2017…the Israeli airport won its title in Week 2 of this year’s competition way back in January…so it’s been a while…but worth the wait…

LATAM Airlines Santiago to San Juan 3 October

LATAM Airlines San Juan Argentina

Nice to see the Chief Fire Officer at San Juan (the Argentinian one) giving the FTWA his official seal of approval…

Judges’ comments: The first of two FTWAs from Arch of Triumph virgins this week – San Juan and Neuquen in Argentina. LATAM Airlines seems to be going on the offensive in terms of expanding rapidly in the South American country this week…which is good news for us…as we get some FTWAs from airports that have never sent in any entries before. However, despite the Chief Fire Officer being there to watch, the first-ever FTWA from the airport is not the best…

Sky Airline Santiago to Rosario 3 October

Not sure if this FTWA looks better from the inside or outside…

Judges’ comments: Its been a while since we have had an interior shot of a FTWA for a route launch. We do like receiving these, but the anna.aero judges are not easily swayed by these ‘glamour’ images of FTWAs. Of course, we will only be scoring the exterior picture. Also…has anyone told the airline that the ‘K’ is the wrong way round on the side of the aircraft…

LATAM Airlines Santiago to Neuquén 4 October

LATAM Airlines Neuquen

A fine Kardashian-style FTWA from new boys Neuquén…

Judges’ comments: The second of two new Argentinian airports to send in FTWAs this week. According to Lonely Planet, there are only two reasons to stop in Neuquén: “The wealth of paleontological sites in the surrounding area, and the excellent wineries just out of town”. So if you ever get to go to this part of Argentina…look out for swathes of drunk dinosaur-loving nerds staggering around with tiny rock hammers…

LATAM Airlines Santiago to Melbourne 5 October

Believe it or not there is a plane somewhere on the apron at Melbourne…

Judges’ comments: Perhaps it was the wind…or just the angle that the picture was taken from…but rather than having two distinct water jets…we seem to have a fine water mist in Melbourne for this first flight. Unless of course they have drafted in local firm Ozmist, which is apparently the leading misting system manufacturer and distributor in Australia, to provide a bit more drama to the route launch pictures?

Frontier Airlines Cincinnati to Miami 5 October

Yep…I’m just going to stand here…and what are you going to do about it?

Judges’ comments: This FTWA divided opinion between the anna.aero judges…with the newcomers to this prestigious job (Kerry and Nick) scoring far higher than the old hands (Jonny and Marc). A word of advice from the more-experienced judges to the newbies…how can you score more than 5.0 for 50% of an FTWA? Unless they are of course awarding points for the belligerence of the apron staff in the foreground…

Jonny: 3.9; Kerry: 6.3; Marc: 4.3; Nick: 6.0

Ryanair Glasgow Prestwick to Rzeszow 5 October

A very soggy FTWA from Rzeszow in Poland…

Judges’ comments: It’s really hard to tell where the water jets start and where the rain ends in this corner of south-east Poland. Under the circumstances – a night-time arrival at 20:55 of the inaugural aircraft from the UK and what appears to be a torrential downpour – the resulting FTWA is a valiant effort…to claim second place this week…
