SriLankan Airlines goes into bat with new route to Australia

Melbourne Airport welcomed the arrival of SriLankan Airlines’ inaugural service from Colombo on 30 October. Among the VIP guests attending the launch celebrations were Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena, Sri Lankan State Minister of Public Enterprise Development and cricket legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena.

  • SriLankan Airlines launched a new route from Colombo (CMB) to Melbourne (MEL) on 29 October. The 8,351-kilometre link from the Sri Lankan capital will operate daily on the carrier’s A330s. There is no direct competition on the airport pair. The Colombo-Melbourne link is SriLankan Airlines’ only route to Australia in W17/18.
