2017 becomes the best year ever in Arch of Triumph history – with four weeks to spare!

This week was a landmark for the Arch of Triumph, as the total number of entries in the 2017 competition passed the previous best year, which was 2016. With four weeks to spare, the FTWA for Wataniya Airways’ arrival in Doha became the 361st entry of the year. Our data elves are forecasting that by year-end we could get close to 1,400 entries over the first five years of this legendary airport marketing and operations partnership for global glory. Asia’s win this week could be enough to secure it second spot in the inter-regional competition, with five victories, just ahead of North America with four. The latter has just four more opportunities to steal the runner-up slot behind the ever-dominant Europe. Keep Monitoring!!

Scoot Singapore to Palembang 23 November

Scooting their way to victory in Indonesia…

Judges’ comments: This has happened quite a few times in the past, but it is still worthy of a mention here. Palembang in Indonesia has never entered the Arch of Triumph competition before, and yet it has stolen victory from some far more experienced airports this week. Even Mexico’s Leon/Guanajuato has previously supplied us with an FTWA in 2014. If this is what the Palembang’s firefighters can do the first time out, next year could see them challenge for the 2018 title…

SalamAir Muscat to Doha 22 November

SalamAir Doha

The first of two FTWAs from the Qatari capital this week…

Judges’ comments: This FTWA looks a bit like a competition I often see my two boys participate in when ‘caught short’ in the open…with no facilities on hand…”I can do it higher than you…” (brief pause) “No…mine is higher than yours”…you get the picture…

Jonny: 6.5; Kerry: 6.4; Marc: 6.2; Nick: 6.7.

Interjet Leon/Guanajuato to Los Angeles 23 November

FTWAs steadily getting better at Leon/Guanajuato…arriba!!

Judges’ comments: As previously mentioned Leon/Guanajuato has entered the Arch of Triumph competition once before…way back in May 2014. That time out it finished fifth out of six competing airports with a score of 24.9. More than three years on, the Mexican airport has mustered third spot out of four entries this week…but its score has leaped up to 28.3…much better…

Jonny: 7.1; Kerry: 6.8; Marc: 7.1; Nick: 7.3.

Wataniya Airways Kuwait City to Doha 23 November

Is this the same crew as the one on duty the day before for SalamAir’s first flight?

Judges’ comments: This FTWA is clearly the better of the two sent in by Doha Airport this week…at least the water jets are meeting on this one. However, both are a bit peaky, reminiscent of the famous ‘Tobleroning’ style that we have seen so often in this feature. According to the Nations Encyclopedia, Kuwait has no actual mountain ranges….so perhaps the Qatari firefighters are trying to fill that void in the Kuwaitis lives for them…

Jonny: 7.6; Kerry: 6.3; Marc: 7.3; Nick: 7.8.
