Sofia Airport celebrated the launch of the first Buta Airways flights on its new Baku to Sofia route on 16 January. All guests and passengers were welcomed according to Bulgarian tradition with bread and salt and received traditional rose oil souvenirs. Among the dignitaries cutting the cake baked to celebrate the occasion were Nargiz Gurbanova, Azerbaijan Ambassador in Bulgaria (centre) and Ivaylo Moskovski, Bulgaria’s Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications (right).
- Buta Airways, commenced operations on the 2,218-kilometre route between Baku (GYD) and Sofia (SOF) on 16 January. It will operate the airport pair weekly (Tuesdays) and faces no direct competition. The new link becomes the only service between Azerbaijan and Bulgaria. Buta Airways is the LCC division of Azerbaijan Airlines and commenced operations last September. ch-aviation shows that its fleet currently consists of six E190s and a single E170. The airline’s route map shows that it currently serves 10 destinations from Baku.
