Sydney Airport baked this delightful cake to greet United Airlines’ third route to the Australian city – Houston. Launched from the US end on the 18 January, the Star Alliance member will offer a daily 787-9 service from its Texas hub, adding to its existing links to Sydney from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

  • United Airlines has become the second airline after Qantas to connect Texas with Australia, with the Star Alliance member now offering a daily service between Houston Intercontinental (IAH) and Sydney (SYD). Commenting on the 13,829-kilometre airport pair, inaugurated on 18 January, Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert said the new service was a win for both travellers and the state’s tourism sector. “Houston presents an exciting opportunity for travellers coming from the US to access Sydney through a direct service. This is great news for travellers as well as businesses across New South Wales. United’s new service will not only help drive tourism and trade, but create exciting new pathways to the US, Canada and Central and South America. It will also make it easier for tourists from the US and beyond to visit Sydney and experience the world’s greatest city. The US is our third-largest international visitor market. This route means exciting new connections throughout the US.” Adding to Culbert’s comments, United’s VP of International Network, Patrick Quayle, said the airline was thrilled to launch the service.“United is the largest US carrier offering the most seats between Sydney and the US and we look forward to continuing to serve as Sydney’s airline of choice.” While no direct competition is offered on this link, which United will serve using its 787-9s, Australian flag carrier Qantas does offer a daily A380 link between Sydney and Dallas/Fort Worth.
