Europe seals back-to-back wins in Arch of Triumph 2018 competition

With next week being the first of the S18 Public Votes – when you lot get to decide the best FTWAs of those sent in to mark the start of new summer services – we decided to review the progress of this year’s winners. Of the 11 weeks of competition so far, the 2018 victors have averaged a winning tally of 32.5. By this point in 2017 the average score achieved by the world’s airports was 30.6, so standards have improved year-on-year. However, the 2016 result from the first 11 weeks of competition is yet to be surpassed, as these entrants delivered a whopping average score of 32.7. Europe takes its second win in as many weeks, and now draws level in second spot with the Middle East and Asia with two Arch of Triumphs each, but still behind early intra-regional leader Australasia which has three wins. Keep monitoring!!

LATAM Airlines Sao Paulo Guarulhos to Rome Fiumicino 16 March

A Trevi fountain FTWA on display at Fiumicino…

Judges’ comments: Standing 26.3m (86ft) high and 49.15m (161.3ft) wide, the Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome and one of the most famous fountains in the world. With a wingspan of 47.57m (156.1ft), the LATAM 767-300 is very similar in width to the Trevi Fountain. However, the tail height of the aircraft is just 16.1m (52.11 ft) high and that is probably why there is an issue with the heights of the water jets here at Fiumicino…

Timing is everything in the Arch of Triumph business…

Judges’ comments: As veterans of six years of judging in this competition, the judges have seen plenty of FTWAs in that time. Therefore, in the judge’s combined experience and looking at the angles of these water jets, this Arch of Triumph was seconds away from being a potential weekly winner. Instead, a trigger happy photographer has contrived to produce something of averageness (that is a real word…I made it up myself) rather than one of beauty…

Jonny: 6.9; Kerry: 8.0; Marc: 6.7; Nick: 7.2.
